Stone Ocean (Japanese: ストーンオーシャン, Hepburn: Sutōn Ōshan) is the sixth story arc of the Japanese manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from January 1, 2000 to April 21, 2003 and was collected into 17 tankōbon volumes.[1] In its original publication, it was known as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6 Jolyne Cujoh: Stone Ocean.[a] It was preceded by Golden Wind and followed by Steel Ball Run. An anime adaptation, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, was announced in April 2021.
Plot[]
Set near Port St. Lucie, Florida in 2011, the story follows Jotaro Kujo's estranged daughter, Jolyne Cujoh, who is framed for a murder and ends up in Green Dolphin Street Jail. Jotaro, who was divorced from Jolyne's mother, comes to visit her, but is rebuffed due to his absence from Jolyne's life. Jotaro then informs his daughter that a disciple of DIO's framed her so that he could kill her in prison, and urges her to escape. Their plan goes awry when a Stand named Whitesnake uses its power to remove Jotaro's Stand and memories in the form of Discs. As Jotaro sinks into a deathlike state, Jolyne realizes the extent of his love for her, and resolves to recover the discs from Whitesnake's user, a Catholic priest known as Enrico Pucci. Along the way, she picks up allies such as Emporio Alnino, a boy born in prison; Ermes Costello, a young woman seeking revenge for her sister; Narciso Anasui, who soon falls into unrequited love for Jolyne; and Weather Report, an amnesiac whose memory Disc had been stolen by Pucci. Jolyne also fights and befriends Foo Fighters, a plankton colony that has obtained one of Whitesnake's Stand Discs and uses its abilities to inhabit a female prisoner's corpse.
Pucci met and idolized DIO sometime before the events of Part 3. While in DIO's company, DIO spoke of "Heaven" and how to create a "perfect world" when certain conditions were met. Though 23 years have passed since DIO's death, Pucci proceeds with his plan to realize this "perfect world", which involves absorbing the remnants of DIO's ability and arriving at a predestined place on the night of the new moon. The process of DIO's plan was outlined in his diary, which Jotaro had previously read and burnt after killing him, forcing Pucci to steal the latter's memories to continue DIO's plan.
Jolyne retrieves Jotaro's Stand Disc, but Pucci only needs Jotaro's memory Disc to complete his plan. He awakens one of DIO's bones in the form of a green homunculus called the Green Baby; despite Jolyne and her friends' efforts, he successfully absorbs it. Foo Fighters and Anasui are mortally wounded in the failed effort to stop Pucci, but Foo Fighters uses the last of her strength to save Anasui's life and retrieve Jotaro's memory Disc. Jolyne and her allies escape from prison, and Jolyne sends both of Jotaro's Discs to the Speedwagon Foundation. Weather Report retrieves his memory Disc, causing him to remember his past as Wes Bluemarine: he was abducted from his biological family after birth, dated his and Pucci's younger sister Perla, and was lynched by the Ku Klux Klan, causing Perla to commit suicide. Wes's resulting rage against humanity drove him to unleash the true snail-transformation power of his Stand Heavy Weather, while Pucci came to the conclusion that humans can't fight fate and would be happier knowing their destiny from the beginning.
With his memories returned, Weather unleashes Heavy Weather once more, affecting countless bystanders and even his own allies. Weather confronts Pucci in a duel, only to die by Whitesnake's hand; however, he uses Whitesnake's ability to leave his Stand's Disc for his allies. Pucci then continues on to Cape Canaveral, where Whitesnake evolves into the gravity-manipulating C-Moon. Jolyne and company catch up to Pucci; though they are soundly outmatched by C-Moon, Jotaro arrives and defends Jolyne and her friends from Pucci. However, Pucci realizes that he can use C-Moon to replicate the gravitational conditions of the new moon, allowing him to complete his plan two days early.
Pucci's Stand evolves into the time-accelerating Made in Heaven. Using Made in Heaven, Pucci begins to rapidly accelerate time, causing days to pass in minutes. Despite Anasui's self-sacrifice, Pucci kills Ermes and Jotaro, and Jolyne sacrifices herself to save Emporio. The effects of Made in Heaven are completed when time accelerates to the end of the universe, leading to a new cycle of time and a parallel universe where all surviving humans have subconscious precognition of their lives. Pucci hunts down Emporio, his only remaining enemy. As he is about to kill Emporio, however, he inadvertently pushes Weather Report's Stand Disc into Emporio's head. Pucci attempts to accelerate time once more, but Emporio uses Weather Report to increase the concentration of the nearby oxygen to a lethal amount. A poisoned and paralyzed Pucci pleads with Emporio to spare him long enough to make his new universe permanent, but Emporio is unmoved, and Weather Report caves in Pucci's skull.
With Pucci's premature death, the parallel universe collapses, creating another new a universe; however, Pucci has been erased from existence, and the precognitive effects of the second universe are gone. In the new universe, Emporio's friends, bar Foo Fighters, are alive once more, but have led different lives due to the lack of Pucci's influence. Now outside prison, Emporio meets Irene, Jolyne's counterpart, who is engaged to Anakiss, Anasui's counterpart. As Ermes's and Weather Report's counterparts join the two as hitchhikers, Emporio tearfully re-introduces himself to Irene after noticing her star-shaped birthmark. The five drive through the rain in Irene's car on their way to meet Irene's father.
Characters[]
- Jolyne Cujoh[b] is an inmate at Green Dolphin Street Jail, and is the daughter of the Stardust Crusaders main protagonist Jotaro Kujo. Her Stand is Stone Free,[c] which allows her to unravel her body into elastic thread.
- Ermes Costello[d] is an inmate who got her sentence on purpose, intending to get revenge on her sister's killer, Sports Maxx. She uses the Stand Kiss,[e] which allows her to place stickers on objects that duplicate the objects perfectly until the sticker is removed, at which point the duplicate and the original will violently fuse together, leaving the object damaged.
- Foo Fighters,[f] shortened to F.F., is a sapient being consisting of plankton. She is her own Stand, with the ability to control the plankton colony as one being or individually, as well as the ability to seal wounds using plankton or possess someone's body, the latter of which she uses to assume the appearance of a deceased prisoner named Atroe.
- Emporio Alnino[g] is a boy born to an unknown inmate in Green Dolphin Street Jail. His Stand, Burning Down the House,[h] manifests in the form of a ghost room that he secretly lives in, together with Weather Report and Narciso Anasui.
- Weather Report[i] , born Domenico Pucci and raised as Wes Bluemarine, is an amnesiac inmate who aides Jolyne at Emporio's request. With no memory of his true name, he goes by the name of his Stand, which allows him to manipulate the weather and the atmosphere. His Stand also has a hidden ability known as Heavy Weather, which sends subliminal messages that gradually transform people into snails.
- Narciso Anasui[j] is an inmate who is obsessively in love with Jolyne, and wishes to marry her despite her clear lack of interest. His stand, Diver Down,[k] allows him to phase himself or his Stand into objects, or into others' bodies to absorb damage dealt to them.
- Jotaro Kujo[l] returns from Stardust Crusaders and Diamond is Unbreakable as Jolyne’s father. Now a middle-aged man, he arrives at Green Dolphin Street Jail to help Jolyne clear her name and stop Enrico Pucci. His stand is Star Platinum,[m] a powerful close ranged Stand with immense strength, precision, speed, and the ability to stop time.
- Father Enrico Pucci[n] is a Roman Catholic priest and Jolyne’s warden of the Green Dolphin Street Jail, and is one of the last loyalists to DIO. Pucci uses the Stand Whitesnake,[o] which allows him to torture his prisoners to their breaking point by extracting their memories and Stands in the form of compact discs; he can then insert these disks into their bystanders for information about their crimes against the public so that he may mercilessly crucify his prisoners without trial. Whitesnake eventually evolves into C-Moon,[p] giving Pucci the ability to reverse the gravity of the area around him, as well as the gravity of anything the Stand touches. After evolving once more, C-Moon changes into Made in Heaven,[q] gaining the power to gradually speed up time until reaching a new parallel universe. In reality, Pucci seeks to avenge DIO and continue his plans by wiping out Jolyne and her family line of Joestars, and therefore rewriting reality into DIO's image.
