Political activism[]

Veerapandian developed an early interest in politics, owing to his father's status as an ardent supporter of the Dravidian movement and as an MLA from DMK party. In the 1970s, Veerapandian gravitated towards the Tamil nationalist movement.

In 1980, he met poet Inkulab and gained an interest in Communism.[3]

While working in college, he formed an organization named Tamilar Iyakkam (Tamils Movement). He later merged it with Thozhar Thiyagu's Thileepan Mandram (Thileepan Forum) to form the "Tamil-Tamil Desiya Iyakkam" (Tamil-Tamil National Movement) and was its general secretary. He later quit due to differences and worked with Saandror Peravai (Assembly of the Learned).

In August 2002, Tamil Nadu Police arrested Veerapandian along with P. Nedumaran, Pudukottai Paavanan and Dr. Thayappan for making speeches in support of the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).[4] They were released under bail on 22 December 2003.[5]

On 17 April 2006, on Nakkeeran Gopal's arrangement, Veerapandian met DMK president M. Karunanidhi for the first time, and has remained an ardent supporter of the DMK ever since.[3]

In 2007, he launched [6] (Dravidian Movement's Tamils' Assembly) with the motto "ஆரியத்தால் வீழ்ந்தோம், திராவிடத்தால் எழுந்தோம், தமிழியத்தால் வெல்வோம்" ("(We) fell by Aryanism, arose by Dravidianism, and will win by Tamilism"). He has been serving as its general secretary ever since.

As a supporter of caste equality and women's rights, Veerapandian has advocated for progressive reforms.

Film career[]

Right from his student years, Veerapandian developed an interest to work in the film industry. He appeared as a magazine editor in the film Ilakkanam (2006). He has also written screenplay of a film and a film song. When approached by director K. V. Anand for acting as a college professor in Ko (2011), Veerapandian declined that role. Later, director Suseenthiran approached him for offering a role in a film (unreleased as of 2021). Citing his socio-political commitment, Veerapandian declined that role as well.[3]

When asked about his favorite actor, Veerapandian has said that he once liked M. G. Ramachandran and that his present favorite is Suriya, whom he values for the latter's "sense of social responsibility". He also commended Siddharth along the same lines.[3]

Personal life[]

Veerapandian married Vasantha in 1973. Their marriage was presided over by K. Rajaram, then minister in the second Karunanidhi ministry. The couple has three children - Lenin, Indhu and Bharatidasan.[7]
