Suhasini Maniratnam (born 15 August 1961)[1] known mononymously as Suhasini, is an Indian actress known for her works in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films. She made her film debut in 1980 with the Tamil film Nenjathai Killathe, for which she won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress. Suhasini won the National Film Award for Best Actress for the Tamil film Sindhu Bhairavi in 1986.[2][3]

She has received two Kerala State Film Awards, three Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Kannada, one Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu, Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and Nandi Awards.[4]

Early life[]

Suhasini was born to actor–lawyer Charuhasan and Komalam in Paramakudi, as the middle child of three sisters. Her sister Nandhini is a doctor, while Subhashini teaches English literature. Several family members — including her father's younger brothers, producer Chandrahasan and actor–politician Kamal Haasan — were actively a part of the Tamil cinema industry. Her cousins Anu Hasan, Shruti Haasan and Akshara Haasan have also since become actresses.

Suhasini attended the Municipal Elementary School in Paramakudi, before moving to Madras aged 12 to live with her grandmother and uncle Kamal Haasan.[5] Suhasini's grandfather Srinivasan, a criminal lawyer, encouraged her to follow the rest of her family and become involved in films. She then became a student of cinematography from the M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute, and started her career as a camera assistant to Ashok Kumar and went on to become an actress.[6]

Film career[]

Suhasini has acted in Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada films. She started her career as a make-up artist for several leading actors. She made her debut with the Tamil film Nenjathai Killathe opposite Kokila Mohan. She was a top star in both Tamil and Telugu films during the 1980s.

Her first Kannada movie was K. Balachandars Benkiyalli Aralida Hoovu (1983) which was a big hit. The mega success of Rajendra Singh Babu's Bandhana opposite Vishnuvardhan, established her in Kannada films as well and she went on to give several more hits over the next few years - Muthina Haara (1990), Suprabhatha, Hendthig Helthini and Amruthavarshini to name a few.[7] Her collaboration with Vishnuvardhan is considered one of the best in Kannada cinema. The duo has acted together in many blockbuster films that include Bandhana, Suprabhatha, Muthina Haara, Hendthig Helthini, Himapatha, Mathad Mathad Mallige and School Master.[7]

She was introduced to Malayalam cinema through Padmarajan's Koodevide (1983), which also featured Mammootty. Her role in the AFI Fest-nominated feature Vanaprastham (1999), which starred Mohanlal, was particularly well received. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress in 1986 for her role in the 1985 Tamil film Sindhu Bhairavi, directed by K. Balachander.

As a director[]

In 1991, Suhasini directed the anthology mini-series Penn (1991) shown on Madras Doordarshan. The series featured eight standalone episodes examining the lives of South Indian women, and starred several of her contemporaries such as Revathi, Radhika and Amala as protagonists.[8][9][10]

Her first feature film was Indira (1996) for GV Films starring Anu Hasan and Arvind Swami . A tale based on the caste system and how the younger generation strives to overcome it, Indira did not perform well at the box office. However, the film won two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, winning Santosh Sivan the award for Best Cinematographer as well as a Special Jury Award for the film itself. The film was also shown in film festivals globally in countries including Belarus and Japan.[11] In November 1997, Suhasini directed a short television film titled Swayamvaram featuring Suchitra Krishnamoorthi and Rajiv Menon . The script had been written by Sujatha and commissioned by Revathi and Suresh Menon.[12]

Suhasini directed a segment titled "Coffee, Anyone?" in Amazon Prime's Putham Pudhu Kaalai (2020). Shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, the segment was set against the backdrop of the 21-day COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020 in India, and featured Suhasini in the leading role alongside her cousins Shruti Haasan and Anu Hasan, and her mother Komalam.[13][14]

Other work[]

Suhasini and her husband Mani Ratnam are involved in the running of their production company Madras Talkies since 1997. In 1998, Suhasini set up the entertainment portal TamilTalkies.com, one of the first internet portals dedicated to covering news from Tamil cinema.[15]

She was named the honorary council for the country of Luxembourg.[16]

Personal life[]

Suhasini married film director Mani Ratnam on 26 August 1988 and the couple have a son, Nandan, born in 1992.[17]
