Sura Bayoru Yekka (born January 4, 1997) is a Canadian professional soccer player who plays as a right-back for Division 2 Feminine Le Havre AC and the Canada women's national team.
Early life[]
Though she was born in Toronto, Ontario, her family had recently moved to Mississauga.[1] Both of Yekka's parents are originally from Uganda, her father was born in Obongi while her mother, Evelyn Adiru, is originally from Arua and was a member of the Uganda track team at the 1984 Summer Olympics.[2][3] She began playing soccer at age six with North Mississauga SC, later playing with Brams United.[1] She is a graduate of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School.[4]
She has played for American collegiate team Michigan Wolverines.
Club career[]
MSV Duisburg[]
Yekka joined MSV Duisburg of the Frauen-Bundesliga in September 2020.[5]
Le Havre AC[]
In 2021, she joined Le Havre AC in France.[6]
International career[]
Yekka made her debut for the Canada national women's team at age 16, on October 30, 2013 against South Korea in Edmonton, Alberta. She played the first half of a 3–0 win.[1] On May 8, 2014 she played the full 90 minutes of a 1–1 draw against the United States in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in front of the second largest crowd to ever watch a women's soccer game in Canada.[7] She scored her first international goal on December 6, 2015 against in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, during the group stage of the 2015 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship.[1] As her 13 senior caps for Canada have been in friendly matches, she remains eligible to play for Uganda (making the one-time change of association first).
