Switzerland is scheduled to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy, having internally selected Marius Bear to represent the country with the song "Boys Do Cry", written by himself and Martin Gallop.
Background[]
Prior to the 2022 contest, Switzerland has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest sixty-one times since their first entry in 1956.[1] Switzerland is noted for having won the first edition of the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Refrain" performed by Lys Assia. Their second and, to this point, most recent victory was achieved in 1988 when Canadian singer Céline Dion won the contest with the song "Ne partez pas sans moi". Following the introduction of semi-finals for the 2004 contest, Switzerland has managed to participate in the final five times. In 2005, the internal selection of Estonian girl band Vanilla Ninja, performing the song "Cool Vibes", qualified Switzerland to the final where they placed 8th. Due to their successful result in 2005, Switzerland was pre-qualified to compete directly in the final in 2006. Between 2007 and 2010, the nation failed to qualify to the final after a string of internal selections. Opting to organize a national final from 2011 to 2018, Switzerland managed to qualify for the final twice. The country returned to internally selecting its entry in 2019, a process that has yielded two top five results: a fourth place in 2019 with the song "She Got Me" by Luca Hänni, and a third place in 2021 with the song "Tout l'univers" by Gjon's Tears.

Internal selection[]
In early April 2021, SRG SSR confirmed their intention to participate at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, opening applications to be part of the selecting committee.[2] On 16 June 2021, the broadcaster published the rules for artists to apply for its internal selection process. Submissions were open between 1 and 15 September 2021.[3]
The selection involved a panel of 100 Swiss viewers – as selected between April and June – alongside a specialized international 23-member jury, composed of former judges in their respective countries – namely (Russia), Amie Borgar (Finland), Anders Øhrstrøm (Denmark), Argyro Christodoulidou (Cyprus), (Lithuania), (Netherlands), Gabriela Horn (Austria), (Netherlands), Gore Melian (Armenia), Grzegorz Urban (Poland), Helga Möller (Iceland), (Sweden), Ilinca Băcilă (Romania), Julian Le Play (Austria), (Estonia), Ludmila Kuts (Belarus), Maria Marcus (Sweden), Mark De Lisser (UK), Milan Havrda (Czech Republic), Ovidiu Jacobsen (Romania and Norway), Pete Watson (UK), Samuli Väänänen (Finland) and Tinkara Kovač (Slovenia); each panel accounted for 50% of the voting, which was articulated in various undisclosed phases and decided the Swiss act for Eurovision before the end of the year.[3][4]
Marius Bear was announced as the selected entrant with the song "Boys Do Cry" on 8 March 2022.[5][6]
At Eurovision[]
According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the "Big Five" (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the final. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) split up the competing countries into six different pots based on voting patterns from previous contests, with countries with favourable voting histories put into the same pot. On 25 January 2022, an allocation draw was held which placed each country into one of the two semi-finals, as well as which half of the show they would perform in. Switzerland has been placed into the first semi-final, to be held on 10 May 2022, and has been scheduled to perform in the first half of the show.[7]
