Tampere commuter rail (Finnish: Tampereen seudun lähijunaliikenne, literal translation Local train traffic of the Tampere region) is the commuter rail system serving Greater Tampere, Finland. The network is part of the Tampere Regional Transport Authority network, and is operated by VR, the Finnish state-owned national railway company. Together with the buses, and trams, the network forms the heart of Tampere's public transportation infrastructure.
Trains run primarily above ground in the Tampere region. Within the municipalities of Lempäälä, Nokia and Tampere, the system uses tickets that are interchangeable with the bus and tram networks managed by Tampere Regional Transport Authority (Nysse). The tickets are also accepted in long-distance trains between Tampere and Orivesi railway station, which also is part of the Nysse area. The M line stations of Toijala and Viiala in Akaa, as well as the rest of the stations on the R line are situated outside of the Nysse area. Travelling beyond the Nysse area, one must use VR commuter tickets, which are also accepted within the area.
Lines[]
At the moment, the network has one line within the boundaries of Pirkanmaa, the M-line:
The present-day train M designation was introduced on 15 December 2019 as the second commuter rail service in Finland not terminating in Helsinki; primarily serving the Pirkanmaa region around Tampere. Most of the services on the route are segmented on the route Tampere−Nokia; only a few services a day use the entire route from Toijala to Nokia.[1] [2] Services to the Tesoma halt started after its completion in 2021.
Also, the Helsinki commuter rail line R extends to Pirkanmaa, having its northern terminus in Tampere.
