Tangle Teezer

Tangle Teezer is a British manufacturer of detangling, blow-drying and styling hairbrushes.[1] Established in 2007, the brushes are now sold in over 75 countries.

Company Foundation & History[]

Tangle Teezer was founded by its inventor Shaun Pulfrey who started a career as a hair colourist in 1978. Throughout his career he worked at Pierre Alexandre, Toni&Guy, Nicky Clarke and Richard Ward salons. In 2002 Pulfrey published I Wanna Be Blonde a book sharing his insider hair colouring tips.

In 2003, Pulfrey began to research and develop his idea for a detangling hairbrush, with the aim of creating the world’s first professional detangling tool. In 2005 Pulfrey remortgaged his flat in Brixton, London to finance the product launch.

Pulfrey appeared on Dragons’ Den in 2007. Pitching The Original detangling hairbrush to Peter Jones, Duncan Bannatyne, James Caan and Deborah Meaden, Pulfrey offered 15% of Tangle Teezer for £80,000 but was rejected. Jones labelled the brushes ‘hair-brained’, Caan said they were a ‘waste of time’ and Bannatyne said he wanted to ‘pull [his] hair out’. However, when the episode was aired, the Tangle Teezer website crashed as a result of public demand,[2] with 1,500 orders placed. In 2008, Boots began stocking the brushes and by 2009, the brand had turned a profit and started to expand into a global market.

Since the launch of The Original detangling hairbrush, the brand has evolved the brushes to detangle different hair types. Thick & Curly was launched in 2016 to detangle thick, curly and textured hair - a brush that was readily picked up by YouTubers who claimed it life changing in the way it not only detangled, but kept the curls natural pattern. The Wet Detangler was launched in 2018 for use on wet and vulnerable hair in the shower, and in 2019 Fine & Fragile was introduced for fine, fragile and colour treated hair - the teeth are 30% softer than that of The Original. Not only addressing detangling, the brand then introduced blow-drying - the latest innovation, Easy Dry & Go launching in 2020 and styling brushes including The Ultimate Finisher and The Back-Combing Hairbrush. The brand's Detangling Sprays for different hair types including kids, were launched in 2020. In 2018, the brand launched Pet Teezer, grooming brushes for dogs.

Tangle Teezer's secret lies in their patented teeth. Registered in over 30 countries, the bristles or teeth cannot be replicated on any other hairbrush in the world. The teeth on the detangling brushes are two-tiered that enables them to flex over tangles whilst smoothing the hair. The innovative teeth technology is adapted across each design of hairbrush to give best performing results.

Turnover[]

Tangle Teezer are expecting to post sales of close to £30 million for 2020. Exports will account for over 80% of revenues in 2020.[3]
