Ted Cadsby is a best-selling author, speaker, corporate director and advisor to organizations and executives.
As executive vice president of CIBC Retail Distribution,[1] he led 18,000 employees in Canada and internationally.[citation needed] He also ran a number of CIBC's wealth management businesses as president and CEO of CIBC Securities Inc., chairman of CIBC Trust Corp., and chairman of CIBC Private Investment Counsel Inc.[citation needed]
Cadsby's writing and speaking initially focused on topics related to behavioral economics but then broadened to the pitfalls of human thinking and the struggle humans endure as a result. He has given speeches on decision-making, team effectiveness, and leadership and has been interviewed by the national media including CBC, CTV, The Globe and Mail and The National Post.[2][3]
Cadsby is or has been a corporate director on several boards, including Meridian Credit Union, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation (CAMH), Resmor Trust, Queen's University Council, Canadian Scholarship Trust Consultants and the Mutual Fund Dealers Association of Canada.[4] He is an external business advisor and advisory council member at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University.[5][6]
Cadsby is the son of Canadian poet Heather Cadsby.[7]
Education and career[]
Cadsby graduated as the medalist in philosophy from Queen's University.[citation needed] After completing the management training program at The Royal Bank of Canada he did his MBA at the Ivey Business School at Western University. Hired at CIBC as an analyst, he earned his Chartered Financial Analyst designation and moved up the organization, shifting from finance to marketing and strategy, prompting the National Post to tout him as “Canada's index fund investment guru”.[8][better source needed] He managed a number of domestic and offshore wealth management businesses before becoming head of distribution for the bank's retail businesses.[citation needed]
Cadsby, accredited with the Institute of Corporate Directors designation, has been a director on both for profit and not-for-profit boards and chaired a number of board committees. As president of TRC Advisory Inc., he provides strategic consultation to executives and organizations, with a focus on group decision making and leadership, centered around his concept of “Leader as Chief Conversation Facilitator.”[9]
Cadsby's first forays as an author were with books on investing and index funds, which garnered praise from experts such as John C. Bogle and Gordon Pape.[10] Cadsby's third publication was Closing the Mind Gap: Making Smarter Decisions in a Hypercomplex World, touted by Amanda Lang,[11] Roger Martin, Philip E. Tetlock, Gary A. Klein,[12] and Don Tapscott, who wrote the book's foreword.
