Teufel Audio (referred to as Teufel) is a German manufacturer of audio products such as loudspeakers, headphones, hi-fi and home cinema systems. The company was founded in Berlin in 1979[1] and employs over 320 people (as of October 2020). Teufel products are available exclusively through direct sales[2] in its own shops and online shops.
History[]
Teufel was founded in Berlin in 1979 by Peter Tschimmel. In the initial phase, the company produced and sold loudspeaker kits consisting of ready-made crossovers, drivers and cabinet components. The first products were loudspeaker sets. In 1987, Teufel moved to Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit. With the M 200 loudspeaker and the corresponding M 6000 subwoofer, Teufel offered the first fully assembled loudspeakers. In 1990, Teufel changed its distribution model, from specialist and retail outlets to direct sales via catalogue.
For the DVD launch in 1995, Teufel offered the THEATER 2, Europe's first 5.1 home cinema system with subwoofer, transverse centre and dipole rear speakers. In 1997,[3] the Teufel opened its online store.
In 2006, Teufel expanded its range and entered the field of PC multimedia speakers. In the same year, private equity firm Riverside[4] acquired Teufel from founder Peter Tschimmel. A year later, the company moved to Buelowbogen in Berlin-Schoeneberg. In 2010, private equity firm HgCapital [5] acquired the company from Riverside. At the same time, Teufel integrated the Berlin-based start-up Raumfeld, which had been developing and selling multi-room streaming speakers since 2008.
In 2012, Dutchman Edgar van Velzen succeeded Thorsten Reuber as CEO. He expanded the international business and added new categories such as Bluetooth speakers to the product range. In 2014, the company moved into the renovated and listed Bikini-Haus in Berlin. At the same time, the company opened its first retail shop, the Teufel Raumfeld Flagshipstore.[6] In 2015, Teufel launched the ROCKSTER,[7] a portable speaker. In 2016, the previous Head of Sales & Marketing Sascha Mallah became Managing Director at Lautsprecher Teufel - together with Joachim Wimmers.
In summer 2018, French private equity company Naxicap[8] took over the company. Since March 2020, Sascha Mallah has led the company as sole Managing Director.[9]
