The Cross Has the Final Word is a song by American Christian musician Cody Carnes. The song was released on July 14, 2017,[1] as the fourth single from his debut studio album, The Darker the Night / The Brighter the Morning (2017).[2] The song was written by Cody Carnes.[3] Jeremy Lutito produced the single.

The Cross Has the Final Word peaked at No. 45 on the US Hot Christian Songs chart.[4]

Background[]

On February 24, 2017, Cody Carnes released his first single with Capitol Christian Music Group called "The Cross Has the Final Word",[5] with the announcement that his debut solo album will be released in 2017, having signed with the label.[6] Carnes shared the story behind the song,[7] saying:

I wrote this song while I was battling with fear, personally, and it dictated the direction of the whole album. The song was written on Good Friday. Although I was dealing with fear, I sat down to read the story of Christ's crucifixion. As I was reading The Bible, I felt God saying to me "the cross has the final word." I had this raging sea of emotions inside of me, and that one statement calmed everything in that moment. It reminded me that I don't have to buy into the lie that evil is rising up. His dying on the cross for our sins has power over death and sin.

Critical reception[]

Jonathan Andre of 365 Days of Inspiring Media in gave a positive review of the song, saying "The song is about the cross, and speaks to the heart of what we believe to be the basis and foundation of our faith. The cross is where the transaction happened. Where Jesus took it upon Himself to take all the sin from every man that has lived and will ever live. To take the sin and to rid the world of an eternity without Him. So that we can live in communion with the Father, Son and Spirit in heaven once our life here on Earth is over. And a song as theological and biblical as that, one can't be impressed by how such a lyrically poetic and powerful track can be placed within the confines of a quasi-hymn style arrangement. The song doesn't really have any choruses or verses, and maybe that's the beauty of it."[9]
