The Cry of the Heart is Connie Smith's first new album release since 2011's Long Line of Heartaches. Both the previous release and The Cry of the Heart were produced by husband and country musician, Marty Stuart. Fellow musician Harry Stinson co-produced the album.[3] A total of 11 tracks were chosen for the disc.[4] Both Smith and Stuart composed two of the album's songs together: "Here Comes My Baby Back Again" and "Spare Me No Truth Tonight".[5] Also included is the 72nd composition written by Nashville songwriter Dallas Frazier titled "I Don't Believe Me Anymore". In addition, the album features recordings penned by Merle Haggard, Melba Montgomery and Carl Jackson.[6]
Release and promotion[]
The Cry of the Heart will be released on August 20, 2021 on Fat Possum Records. It will be offered as a compact disc, music download and vinyl LP.[5] The album's lead single was issued on May 12, 2021 titled "Look Out Heart". Jon Freeman of Rolling Stone called the track "a spunky-but-suspicious tune propelled by a shuffling backbeat and walking bassline, accented by slinky electric guitar B-bending."[3] According to a press release, Smith is stated to be "at her finest" on the record.[4]
