The Cup of Tea is a painting by Mary Cassatt which is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.[1]It was painted in Paris around 1880 to 1881. Cassat used her sister, Lydia as the model.[2][3]
Cassatt was an American artist who lived abroad in Europe for more than a decade. Like other women artists of her era, Cassat's subjects were frequently domestic scenes. These subjects were favored because women in Cassat's era were not permitted to go out alone. The Cup of Tea depicts a" social ritual for upper-middle-class women".[1] Cassatt adopted an impressionist manner.[4][5] where she used contrasting, complementary colors .[6]
