The Daily Observer is an English-language newspaper in Bangladesh. The founding editor is Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, who was formerly editor of The Bangladesh Observer.[1][2]

History[]

The Daily Observer[3] hit the stands in Bangladesh on 1 February 2011 after now defunct Bangladesh Observer stopped publication in 2010. Following the independence from British rule, The Pakistan Observer came to the light in 1949. It had a great role in shaping public opinion of Pakistan, in particular, East Pakistan. After East Pakistan became independent as Bangladesh, the newspaper was renamed Bangladesh Observer and was published under Bangladesh Observer Group. The Bangladesh Observer was founded by Hamidul Huq Choudhury, who was born in Noakhali District, Bengal (subsequently East Pakistan and now Bangladesh) in 1901. The Bangladesh Observer had a strong, independent editorial policy that reflected both the personality its owner Hamidul Haq and editor Abdus Salam. With the passage of time, the sales of the newspaper declined and eventually it was closed in 2010.[4][5] Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury,[6] the last editor of Bangladesh Observer,[7] again started the circulation of the Bangladesh Observer newspaper by the new name The Daily Observer in 2011.[8]

The editor was sued by MP Nizam Uddin Hazari in 2017 for publishing an allegedly defamatory article mentioning him.[9]
