The Gist is an American podcast previously produced by Slate magazine that covers a variety of current news and issues. The show first aired in May 2014,[1] and is hosted by Mike Pesca.[2]

Pesca was indefinitely suspended by Slate on February 22, 2021, due to his debate of the appropriateness of the use of racial slurs in certain circumstances.[3] In early September 2021, the Washington Post reported that Pesca and Slate had “mutually agreed to part ways … As part of the arrangement, Pesca will take his podcast, “The Gist,” to an independent platform.”[4] The podcast was relaunched by Peach Fish Productions on January 24, 2022.[5]

The podcast concludes with a "spiel", which is short op-ed by Pesca on some topic that may or may not have already been discussed in the podcast. On the podcast-rating site Podbay, The Gist's average rating is 4.5 out of 5.
