The Inbestigators (stylised as The InBESTigators) is an Australian mockumentary comedy children's television series produced by Gristmill Productions with Screen Australia in association with Film Victoria and the Australian Children's Television Foundation (ACTF). The series stars Abby Bergman, Anna Cooke, Aston Droomer and Jamil Smyth-Secka as Ava Andrikides, Maudie Miller, Ezra Banks and Kyle Klimson, fifth-grade kids who solve crimes around their school and neighbourhood.

Created by Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope, the series employs the comic tone of Little Lunch, a previous series they worked on, and the mystery genre. Production took place at Moorabbin Primary School in Moorabbin, Victoria. The show aired from 21 June 2019 to 30 November 2019 over two series on ABC Me. Internationally, it was released on Netflix which released the first and second series in mid-2019 and early-2020.

Garnering critical acclaim for its comedy, the series received two AACTA Award nominations for Best Children's Television Series; a spin-off web series, The InBESTigators: Crime Crack, was released in July 2019 as well as a cast Q&A in late-2019 and a study guide during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Development[]

The Inbestigators is created by Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope, who are also known for Little Lunch. After seeing the success of Little Lunch, Butler and Hope aspired to create another children's comedy. To create The Inbestigators, they "took the comic tone of Little Lunch and married with it the private detective, mystery genre".[6] The series' executive producer and the Australian Children's Television Foundation's head of development and production, Bernadette O'Mahony predicted that the series would be a hit among children and parents for its originality, mystery and characters.[6]

Butler explained that they created the show as a reaction to the "world [they're] living in".[7] He thought the world was toxic and affected children's view of it. In response, he decided to make a show of kids with "ethnic diversity and gender equity and respect and integrity and kindness" to encourage "something else" in children.[7] Lily Pavolic stated The Inbestigators provided children the opportunity to learn problem-solving skills such as observation, questioning, connecting ideas, motives and using evidence.[8] Screen Australia's head of production, Sally Callan, further stated: "It's vital that young Australians are able to see their country, their stories and hear their accent reflected on the screen[.] [...] The characters in The InBESTigators [...] are distinctive and inclusive, and tell stories that are innovative and culturally significant."[9] In June 2018, ABC and Screen Australia greenlit The InBESTigators.[9]

Writing[]

Writing for the series began in 2017.[4] The Inbestigators is written by Robyn Butler, Wayne Hope, Molly Daniels, Lisa Marie Corso, Maddy Butler, Jayden Masciulli and Bob Franklin. Butler and Hope instructed the writers keep the scripts clear and simple without dumbing it down, and to make sure the children's dialogue was not adultlike: "Rather than writing what was funny or nostalgic for them, they had to get into the bones of a 10-year-old."[7]

Casting[]

After the scripts were written, the team began to focus on the production and searched for actors to play the main roles, seeking talent, wherewithal and confidence. After 715 individual auditions, newcomers Aston Droomer, Anna Cooke, Abby Bergman and Jamil Smyth-Secka were cast as Ezra Banks, Maudie Miller, Ava Andrikides and Kyle Klimson. The series employed many children in guests roles, a majority of whom also auditioned for the main roles.[4] Cooke heard about auditions for The Inbestigators through her school newsletter. She thought it "looked fun" and attended "three or four auditions".[10] In her auditions, Bergman learnt and performed lines for the casting agency. She attended four auditions, the last of which was the chemistry read.[11] Droomer's agency, Emma Raciti Management, sent an audition request for his role in The Inbestigators. Before his first audition, he needed to learn two scripts. For the following auditions, he learnt more scripts, met with the series' creators and did a chemistry read.[12]

Filming[]

Originally, the series' production was set to last from July to November 2018.[13] Filming began on 19 July 2018 at Moorabbin Primary School in Melbourne, Australia, and the wrap date was pushed back to December 2018.[4] The children worked for eight hours a day, with ten-minute breaks between each hour and tutoring on set.[14] Filming officially wrapped in November 2018. Dan Maxwell acted as photography director, with Simon McCutcheon as production designer.[15] For the series' detective agency studio, the creators originally wanted to create it at their Port Melbourne production office, but realising travel would be difficult, they mounted it on the staff car park.[14] Episodes were not filmed chronologically; instead, scenes taking place in the same location would be shot together.[10] Between the first and second series' filming, there was a break that lasted one week.[11]

Reception[]

Critical response[]

The Inbestigators has garnered critical acclaim, particularly for its comedy.[27] Writing for Decider, Joel Keller said the series has a "sharp sense of humor [sic] with a lot of gentle snarkiness".[5] The Australian child actors' approach towards the comedy was also praised, Keller stating "if this show were made with British or American kids, it would not have been as good."[5] While The Star's Mumtaj Begum also found the main characters stereotypical, she asserted that their enthusiasm swayed the audience away from this, giving the show a score of seven out of ten.[28] For TV Tonight, David Knox gave the show three out of five stars, emphasising its originality, diversity, performances and calling it the "next best thing since [...] Miss Fisher['s Murder Mysteries]."[29]

The series has not been devoid of criticism, however. In her largely positive review, Mandie Caroll of Common Sense Media criticised the characters of Kyle and Ezra as stereotypical.[1] While admiring the show's humour, thinking and diverse cast, and personalities, NextFlicks.tv thought the show's "mockumentary style can be a bit flat".[30]
