The Independent is an upcoming American political thriller film written by Evan Parter and directed by Amy Rice. It stars Jodie Turner-Smith, Brian Cox, John Cena, and Ann Dowd. The film is set to be released by Relativity Media and Rogue Pictures in 2022.

Premise[]

Set in the final weeks of the most consequential presidential election in history, a journalist teams up with her idol to uncover a conspiracy that places the fate of the election and the country in their hands.

Cast[]

Production[]

The Independent is a co-production between Anonymous Content, Park Pictures, and The Exchange. In 2013, Evan Parter's screenplay for the political thriller film ended up on The Black List, an annual survey of the most popular screenplays that had not yet been produced. According to the survey, which polled over 250 film executives, his screenplay received twenty votes for "best" screenplay, tying with Frank John Hughes's Pox Americana and Lisa Joy Nolan's Reminiscence.[1] In February 2020, Amy Rice became on board to direct and Kumail Nanjiani joined the cast, with The Exchange announcing it would sell the film's distribution rights at the European Film Market in Berlin.[2] At the event, Rice said she had immediately gone to Los Angeles to meet Parter after reading the script. She also said the story "merges two worlds that I am very passionate about, which are journalism and politics." She cited Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom, Chris Hegedus and D. A. Pennebaker's The War Room, and the series House of Cards as major influences.[3] By September 2021, Nanjiani had dropped out of the project, with Jodie Turner-Smith, Brian Cox, John Cena, and Kathy Bates joining the cast.[4][5] In December 2021, Ann Dowd was added to the cast, replacing Bates who had to depart the production due to scheduling conflicts, and Relativity Media and Rogue Pictures acquired the film's distribution rights.[6]

Principal photography, originally scheduled to begin in November 2021,[7] was confirmed to have begun the following month in New York City around 24th Street and 6th Avenue. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2022.[6][8]
