The Journey: Tumultuous Times (Chinese: 信约：动荡的年代, also known as Tumultuous Times) is Chinese language period drama which aired on MediaCorp Channel 8. It is the second of The Journey trilogy which chronicles the history of Singapore through the eyes of immigrants during the pre-World War II era until contemporary times. Production began on June 2014.^[1] It stars young casts with Shaun Chen, Jeanette Aw, Andie Chen, Felicia Chin, Romeo Tan, Carrie Wong and Chen Hanwei as the main casts of the second instalment. The show aired at 9pm on weekdays and had a repeat telecast at 8am the following day.^[2] The series will be Channel 8's 2014 year-end blockbuster celebrating 51 years of television.

Like its predecessor, The Journey: A Voyage, Tumultuous Times will be the second periodical drama to use CGI.

It is also partly sponsored by the Media Development Authority of Singapore.

The Journey will culminate in Singapore's nation building celebrations in 2015 with The Journey: Our Homeland, in time for Singapore's 50th National Day.^[3]

Plot[]

The Journey: Tumultuous Times will depict the period of the Japanese Occupation where the adversity only served to strengthen the characters' survival instinct. When the British colonialists returned, stirrings of dissent became more apparent about their right to rule. In this period of uncertainty, there were vastly different ideals about how independence could be achieved. Yet despite all odds, they pulled through and survived.

This is the story of five young people unraveled over a period of 20 years (1940-1965) spanning World War II and Independence. Like its predecessor, Tumultuous Times will be the second periodical drama to use CGI. Major events that will happen in the drama include the Japanese occupation of Singapore, Hock Lee bus riots, student demonstrations, and social tensions.

In the wee hours of the morning on 8 December 1941, Japanese planes attacked Singapore by air under the cloak of the night. This is the beginning of the period of unrest in Singapore. During the Sook Ching, Zhang Tianying (Allen Chen) gets captured and is killed. Zhang Huiniang (Joanne Peh) dies in her two children's arms after being brutally raped by the Kempeitai.

In 1954, 9 years after the Japanese Surrender, Zhang Jia, now with the surname Hu, lives with his adoptive father, Hu Weiren (Chen Hanwei). Zhang Min is living with her cousins, Zhang Yan, Hong Dangyong, Hong Minghui and their parents. Hu Jia has an obvious crush on Bai Lanxiang, also known as Sweet Soup Lass (Carrie Wong). Hu Jia has become a gang leader and is the heir to Liang Sihai's (Zheng Ge Ping) brand Siu Yee Tong, while another gang, The Seventh Gate of Loyalty sends a mole to join Hu Jia's gang.

The Hock Lee Bus Riots causes a series of other riots like the halting of education during the State of Emergency in Singapore. One of Zhang Min's (Felicia Chin) students are killed in the ensuing protest. Hu Jia then finds out about his parent's horrible deaths, all caused by Weiren. He takes revenge by drowning Weiren to honour his parents.

Zhang Min is then imprisoned by Zhang Yan, who married Minghui. Zhang Yan believes that his brother-in-law is part of an underground gang of fugitives and orders Dangyong to be killed. Minghui overhears this, and files for a divorce. Sweet Soup Lass is then raped and killed after being kidnapped by the mole, Jaws. The Seventh Gate of Loyalty burns the hut where Sweet Soup Lass died. Hu Jia retrieves her body, barely surviving. He then slips into a bout of depression. Minghui tries to console him but to no avail.

Meanwhile, Zhang Yan gets addicted to his power and abuses it, getting drunk and finding a new woman, Fang Lulu. Someone tries to kill Zhang Yan but Minghui takes the bullet for him. She survives.

Dangyong tries to find Minghui at a hospital before being ambushed my Zhang Yan and his group. They run to a bridge before Zhang Yan shoots him, and Dangyong falls into a river. After reaching land, his comrade Ding Hao tries to betray him, but Hu Jia intervenes and takes care of Dangyong. Dangyong realises that his right hand has been crippled.

Zhang Min gets raped by Zhang Yan. She decides to cheapen herself so that Dangyong will survive. Dangyong saves a PTSD-stricken Zhang Min and they get married. Zhang Min then realises her brother is not dead and has been by her side this whole time. Hu Jia and Zhang Min reconcile. Meanwhile, Hu Jia manages to hunt down Jaws and kill him.

Zhang Yan, who tries to kill Dangyong himself accidentally causes the Bukit Ho Swee fire. 2000 families go homeless and Dangyong is blamed to be the arsonist. He goes to jail and studies law there. Then, Zhang Tianpeng (Li Nanxing) realises that Zhang Yan sold his company, Brothers' Balm 2 years ago and dies of a heart attack. Zhang Yan blames Lulu for instigating him to sell his company. Lulu is killed and Zhang Yan goes to jail in England. Hu Jia invites Minghui to dinner but gets stabbed by Bai Gou, the leader of the Seventh Gate of Loyalty. Hu Jia kills him and proposes to Minghui.

It is 1965. Independence arrives and the Zhang and Hong family start a new life...

As an adopted child, Zhang Min often intercedes when Zhang Jia is naughty and begs for mercy on his behalf. Tianying enjoys a comfortable life. Business in the pharmaceuticals factory is good, and Huiniang is a good wife. However, word that the Japanese are nearing Malaysia leaves him worried that war will soon break out. Indeed, on 12 Dec 1941, the people are awakened by an air raid. When Singapore is under siege, Tianying offends a hooligan, Hu Weiren (Chen Hanwei), while attending to the injured with Zhang Jia. When the war worsens, Zhang Tianpeng (Li Nanxing) and Tianying decide to flee Singapore by boat with their families but Tianying's family encounters delays en route to the harbor.

In February 1942, the Japanese enter Singapore. On New Year's Eve, Tianying and his family eat a simple meal. He wants Huiniang to go to the village to hide, while he stays to protect the company. Huiniang refuses to leave, and suggests they send the children to Hong Shi (Desmond Tan) and Lin Yazi (Jeanette Aw) when the situation stabilises. The Japanese military orders all healthy men to get a check-up at a designated zone. Traitor Hu Weiren discovers Tianying in the crowd and exposes him to the Japanese, causing Tianying to be detained. To save Tianying, Huiniang spends a huge sum of money and even gets herself injured in the process. On her deathbed, Huiniang asks Zhang Min to bring Zhang Jia to look for Hong Shi and Yazi.

Along the way, Weiren tries to capture Zhang Min to offer to the Japanese military. While trying to rescue Zhang Min, Zhang Jia falls into the river with Hu Weiren. Hu Weiren rescues Zhang Jia and forces him to acknowledge him as his father. In order to find out the whereabouts of his father, Zhang Jia reluctantly agrees and changes his name to Hu Jia. In Ipoh, Hong Shi and Yazi are anxious about Tianying and Tianpeng. They remind their children, Hong Dangyong (Gary Tan) and Hong Minghui (Valere Ng), how the two brothers had helped them. Zhang Min turns up at their door and tells them Huiniang has died, while Tianying and Zhang Jia are missing.

It has been six years since he died shielding his father from a stab wound. Weiren believes his son's soul has possessed Hu Jia and wants him to be his son. Hence, he lies that Tianying has been sent to build the railroad in Siam and only he can help save him. He promises that once Tianying returns, their own ties will be severed. Many years passed by, Zhang Tianpeng's son Zhang Yan (Romeo Tan) returns from his studies abroad. Hong Shi's daughter, Hong Minghui (Jeanette Aw), looks forward to seeing Zhang Yan returns. Zhang Min (Felicia Chin) is also in a relationship with Minghui's brother, Hong Dangyong (Andie Chen). Hu Jia (Shaun Chen), on the other hand, has become the head of a gang.

Fearing that he will implicate Tianpeng's family and Zhang Min, Hu Jia decides not to acknowledge them. Dangyong fights for rights for workers to get more benefits and Zhang Min fully supports him. She also tells him that Zhang Yan has taught her a lot which gives her more insight into the societal climate. Hu Jia falls into White Dog's trap. Sweet Soup Lass tips Hu Jia's lackeys off, and Bullethead leads a band of men to save their chief. Hu Jia returns to his hideout. Weiren has become slow-witted after a bout of fever and often imagines people are in pursuit of traitors like him. Ten years ago, Hu Jia had saved Weiren, who was ill.

Hu Jia saves Bullethead, but get into trouble after hitting the Caucasian police official while leaving Zhang Yan injured as well. Zhang Min and Dangyong rush to aid Zhang Yan. Meanwhile, Hu Jia and Bullethead challenge Zhang Yan to a fight. Hu Jia's quick reflexes leave a deep impression on Dangyong. Hu Jia's boss, Liang Sihai (Zheng Geping), wants Bullethead to take the rap. Hu Jia is reluctant to inform Bullethead of his decision as he remembers Bullethead still has a family to feed. In reality, Bullethead is aware of Sihai's decision and intends to give himself up after getting Hu Jia intoxicated but later realises his sister, Xiaoping, is missing...

Refusing to accede to Bai Gou's request, Bullethead gets into a fight with Bai Gou's men. Hu Jia appears in the nick of time, subdues Bai Gou's men and rescues Xiaoping. He bumps into Minghui again in the process.

The situation goes out of control and the students go head on with the police. Minghui pulls the injured Zhang Min away and both get pursued by the police. Hu Jia rescues them and brings Zhang Min home to rest. Zhang Jia (Hu Jia) recognises Zhang Min as his sister, and Zhang Min seems to recognise Hu Jia as her brother before she falls into unconsciousness.

Dangyong accuses Zhang Yan of being a colonial lackey when he arrives to provide instructions to the bus company manager on handling the situation.

Hu Jia hurriedly informs Zhang Min when he learns that Old Cai has discovered Dangyong's whereabouts.

Zhang Yan asks her to be together with him and she agrees without hesitation. Zhang Yan's hatred for Dangyong deepens when he sees Zhang Min willing to sacrifice herself for Dangyong.

Minghui looks for Zhang Min and discovers her battered body as a result of trying to induce a miscarriage but the foetus is unharmed. Dangyong visits the deranged Zhang Min and the couple decides to get married after a tearful reunion.

Hong Kuan discovers Zhang Yan and he reveals to Hong Kuan that he is his real father. Hong Kuan breaks free when Zhang Yan tries to take him away. Zhang Yan's lighter dropped onto the kerosene, causing a huge fire. Dangyong frees Zhang Yan but Zhang Yan accuses Dangyong as the arsonist. Dangyong is imprisoned. Some time later, Tianpeng learns that his son Zhang Yan has sold Brothers Balm and dies of a heart attack. Upon learning of his death, Zhang Yan breaks down in tears. Zhang Jia and Minghui are ambushed by Bai Gou and Hu Jia kills Bai Gou in the resulting fight. On 9 August 1965, Singapore separates from Malaysia. Years later, Dangyong, Zhang Min, Zhang Jia and Minghui attend a National Day Parade.
