The Outfit is a 2022 American crime drama film directed by Graham Moore in his directorial debut from a screenplay by Moore and Johnathan McClain. It stars an ensemble cast including Mark Rylance, Zoey Deutch, Johnny Flynn, Dylan O'Brien, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Simon Russell Beale. The plot centers around an English tailor (Rylance) in Chicago whose primary customers are a family of vicious gangsters. The film premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival on February 14, 2022.[2] It is scheduled to be released in the United States on March 18, 2022, by Focus Features. The film received generally positive reviews from critics.

Leonard is an English tailor who used to craft suits on London's world-famous Savile Row. After a personal tragedy he finds himself in Chicago, operating a small tailor shop in a rough part of town where he makes beautiful clothes for the only people around who can afford them: a family of vicious gangsters.[3]

In January 2021, it was announced that Graham Moore was set to make his directorial debut on the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Johnathan McClain, with FilmNation Entertainment set to produce the film.[4] In February 2021, Focus Features pre-bought the rights to distribute the film with Mark Rylance, Zoey Deutch, Dylan O'Brien, and Johnny Flynn attached to star.[3] Simon Russell Beale and Nikki Amuka-Bird were added to the cast in April 2021.[5] Principal photography began on March 5, 2021 in London, England, with cinematographer Dick Pope.[3] Filming wrapped in early April 2021.[6][5] During post-production, editing was completed by William Goldenberg and the musical score was composed by Alexandre Desplat.[3][7]

Release[]

The film premiered at the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival on February 14, 2022.[2] It is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on March 18, 2022,[8] after being postponed from its original February 25 date.[9]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 91% of 25 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.3/10.[10] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 67 out of 100 based on 11 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[11]

The performances of the cast, especially Rylance's, were well-received. Critics gave positive notes to the costume and production design, cinematography, score, and Moore's screenplay.[12][13] Deadline Hollywood's Pete Hammond said Moore had "crafted a literate and thrilling gangster picture that brings a fresh touch to a well-worn genre".[12]
