The Quintessential Quintuplets (Japanese: 五等分の花嫁, Hepburn: Go-Tōbun no Hanayome, lit. "Quintuplet Brides"), also known as 5-Tōbun no Hanayome, is a television anime series based on shōnen manga series written and illustrated by Negi Haruba. The second season's title is stylized as The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬. A movie will follow to officially conclude the anime in 2022.

The anime series is licensed in North America under CrunchyrollFunimation partnership.[1][2] A second season was announced in a special event for the first season on May 5, 2019.[3] Kaori is replacing Satoshi Kuwabara as the director of the season, and Keiichirō Ōchi is returning to write the scripts. Bibury Animation Studios is replacing Tezuka Productions as the animation studio. The season was originally scheduled to premiere in October 2020,[4] but due to issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the anime was delayed to air from January 8 to March 26, 2021.[5] The opening theme song is "The shape of the Quintuplets" (五等分のカタチ, "Go-Tōbun no Katachi"), and the ending theme song is "First Love" (はつこい, "Hatsukoi") both performed by the Nakano Family Quintuplets (中野家の五つ子, Nakano-ke no Itsutsugo).[6] The ending theme of the last episode is "Quintuplet Feelings" (五等分の気持ち, Gotōbun no Kimochi) also performed by the Nakano Family Quintuplets (中野家の五つ子, Nakano-ke no Itsutsugo), which was also the opening of the first season.[7]

Futaro ends in the hospital because of the cold he got during the school camp. The doctor visiting him triggers some memories of a girl Futaro met during a school trip six years before. The quintuplets all pay him a visit, and Itsuki brings him a good luck charm very similar to the ones the girl from his memories had bought in Kyoto. After being released from the hospital, Futaro goes to the quintuplets' apartment, running into one of them who is just after a shower. Unable to recognize her as well as the zero-points tests she threw at him in the heat of the moment, Futaro challenges himself to recognize the five sisters with identical hairstyles, failing spectacularly. Itsuki wonders if Futaro is trying to find out the identity of the girl from his past, but he dismisses the idea of her being one of the quintuplets as the girl wouldn't have grown into such a poor student after promising to study hard.

With one week left before the final exams begin, Futaro stays up all night preparing practice tests for the quintuplets. The session goes downhill when Nino starts arguing with Miku and refuses to do the mock tests. Itsuki gets involved, causing the fight to escalate, with both Nino and Itsuki deciding to run away from home. The next day, Futaro and Miku search for Itsuki and Nino by themselves. They find Nino staying at a luxury hotel, and she refuses to leave. Futaro finds out that Itsuki came to his home to stay after the spat with Nino. That night, Itsuki tells Futaro that the quintuplets used to live in poverty too, as their mother was a single mom until she married their father and she died of illness. The next day, Futaro discovers that Yotsuba is again helping the track club for an upcoming marathon. Futaro is left wondering if the quintuplets really need him in their lives, when the girl he met years ago in Kyoto appears.

After his encounter with the girl from his past, Futaro falls into the lake, and returns to Nino's hotel. The two talk, and Nino asks what happened. A flashback shows Futaro's encounter with the girl from before, who calls herself Rena. Rena states than maybe she should disappear so Futaro won't be limited by the past anymore. She takes the photo with her, before saying saying goodbye to him. Nino tries to cheer him up, saying there must be someone in the world for a guy like him. Futaro then notices that Nino took the mock exams he made and has been studying since then. Nino apologizes for her behavior, but Nino and Itsuki refuse to reconcile. Futaro tells Nino that his encounter with Rena made him realize the need to leave the past behind. Nino admits that she could move forward after seeing Kintaro one last time to say goodbye. Futaro offers to help her meet him again, and though conflicted, he visits Nino disguised as Kintaro. At the hotel's cafeteria, Nino thanks Futaro, only to reveal she knew the truth all along. The next day at school, Nino is still absent. There's another issue: Yotsuba’s agreement with the track club as the final exams coming up. Finally, Miku visits Nino.

While Futaro, Ichika and Itsuki try to find a way to get Yotsuba out of the track club, Nino and Miku talk about Futaro. After Itsuki fails to trick the track club captain, Nino arrives to do it, revealing that she cut her hair. Yotsuba chooses to confront the track club herself, while Nino and Itsuki reconcile. With the sisters finally reunited, the study sessions resume. After unsuccessful results, Fuutarou offers to give them some cheating papers as a last resort. The day of the exams arrives. The next day, Ebata informs the girls that Futaro has quit his tutoring job and is banned from entering the building, so he will take over temporarily. The girls open up the cheating papers Futaro left for them to discover a farewell message. The sisters realize they don't want to lose Futaro and ask Ebata for help. The girls surprise Futaro at his job and reveal that they've moved to a modest residence so Futaro can tutor them until the end. After the sisters toss their keycards over a bridge, Futaro falls into the water trying to catch them. The sisters jump in to save him, though Nino needs Futaro to rescue her instead. Futaro finally decides to cut ties with his past and Rena.

Maruo recalls when Futaro called him out for being a neglectful father. Futaro and Raiha meet with the Nakano sisters for New Year. While discussing on how they'll eventually pay him, the sisters surprise Futaro by finishing their winter homework. Nino reveals that Ichika has been working in multiple acting roles in order to keep a steady income, and discuss the possibility of getting part-time jobs themselves. Futaro however suggests they should focus on studying for the time being. While searching for a job, Itsuki gets a phone call from her father. Futaro later accompanies Yotsuba and Nino to buy groceries. Nino is conflicted about her feelings for Futaro. On the way back, they overhear their father and Itsuki talking in a nearby café. Maruo wants them to go back to their apartment, but Itsuki refuses. Yotsuba intervenes, and they make a deal: if the girls pass the final exams, Futaro will be allowed back in the apartment and re-hired as their tutor, but if they fail, they will transfer schools again.

Futaro is determined that all of the quintuplets pass the final exams. The day finally arrives, and the sisters recall everything they've achieved so far. Miku has been practicing chocolate-making for Valentine's Day to give Futaro, and Ichika convinces Nino to help her with it. While visiting her mother's grave, Itsuki meets with Shimoda, a former student of Rena Nakano who decided to follow her footsteps. Shimoda offers to support Itsuki should she decide to pursue the same career. Later, Ichika tricks Futaro into going to the library to keep him away while Miku and Nino make chocolates. Futaro decides they should take a day off for a trip to an amusement park. Yotsuba separates from the group and Futaro finds her trying to study. Yotsuba tells Futaro that she failed the remedial exams, but her sisters chose to transfer with her so she wouldn't be alone. Futaro realizes that the quintuplets can help each other with their strong points, and creates a new study plan. All of the quintuplets pass their exams. Miku planned on confessing to Futaro if she got the highest scores, but is shocked when Ichika beats her by two points. Futaro decides to search for Nino, who has left, so they all can celebrate together.

Nino has gone to talk to Maruo about the quintuplets returning to the apartment, which Nino refuses to do. Futaro arrives on his boss's motorbike to pick her up. On the ride to the restaurant, Nino confesses her feelings. After the celebration, Nino speaks to Futaro. When she realizes that he didn't hear her confession, Nino tells him again that she loves him. Ichika accidentally overhears. Futaro wins a trip to Toraiwa Hot Springs, bringing along his father and Raiha. He quickly runs into the Nakano quintuplets, who've come with their father for a family vacation. Futaro starts seeing Itsuki everywhere, though in reality all of the sisters are dressed identically. Futaro finds a note telling him to meet in the garden at midnight, which he assumes is from Itsuki. Later, one of the sisters tells Futaro they should end their relationship. Futaro learns that the innkeeper is the girls’ grandfather. The next morning, Itsuki calls Futaro to ask why he never showed up. They agree to meet at the mixed baths to talk. Their chat is interrupted by Nino, who leaves in a huff when he doesn't recognize her. Futaro speaks about how they've all changed since they met him. Itsuki tells him that he's no longer just their tutor, but a friend.

Futaro attempts to guess the identity of the fake Itsuki from the first night. However, he's unable to tell the sisters apart by talking alone, until Yotsuba gives herself away. She explains that the shock she caused their grandfather when she began wearing her ribbon caused the girls to assume Itsuki's appearance whenever they visited him. In the hot springs, Nino tells Ichika that she plans do her best to win Futaro's love. Futaro asks the innkeeper how to tell the girls apart. He is told that there's no trick, just love. Their grandfather simply pays attention to the voices and mannerisms of the girls. Nino plans to meet alone with Futaro, and she asks Ichika for help. Yotsuba finds Ichika crying. Yotsuba advises her to do what she wants and have no regrets. The following morning, Futaro meets with Miku, still trying to identify her as the fake Itsuki, and briefly manages to identify her due to the way she clenches her fists. As vacation ends, the innkeeper asks Futaro to tell his granddaughters to be true to themselves. Futaro goes to check on the Bell of Vows, and a girl running towards him tackles him to the ground, causing the bell to ring.

The quintuplets look for jobs to help support Ichika for the rent. Miku and Nino compete for an opening at the bakery where Futaro works. Nino wins. Miku applies to work at the neighboring bakery as she simply likes to bake. At the start of their third year, the quintuplets are placed in the same class as Futaro, where they're questioned by their curious classmates. Yotsuba volunteers herself and Futaro to be class reps. Futaro inadvertently teaches the other classmates how to tell the siblings apart. Miku hopes to find Futaro the perfect birthday gift. At the bakery, Nino tries to adjust to the hectic workload, while dealing with her relationship with Futaro, who's been keeping his distance. They talk it out. Takeda suggests that Futaro quit tutoring, but Futaro defends his choice, declaring that he'll make sure the sisters pass and that he'll make it into the Top 10 of the national mock exams. Ichika reveals her feelings for Futaro to Nino, and they resolve to compete for his love. The quints decide to postpone the gift-giving until exams are over. On Futaro’s birthday, Itsuki tells him she's begun interning at a cram school. After the exam, Futaro surpasses Takeda, placing 3rd nationally. The girls present their gifts. Miku tells Yotsuba that she wants to prepare a lunch for Futaro on their upcoming school trip. Yotsuba tries to help set them up together, but Ichika interferes. Raiha takes Futaro out shopping and invites Itsuki and Yotsuba to join them. Raiha mentions Rena, calling her Futaro’s "first crush". On the bus, Yotsuba learns that Miku made lunch for Futaro. The girls decide to play a card game. As a penalty, the losers must obey the winner. Once they arrive, the sisters follow behind Futaro's group up the mountain, and when the path splits, Yotsuba, having won the card game, orders Itsuki, Ichika, and Nino to go up one path, while she and Miku go up the other. Ichika sneaks away to make it to the top first while in her Miku disguise to fool Futaro, however Miku and Yotsuba catch her in the disguise. Yotsuba chastises her for getting in the way of Miku's confession. Futaro overhears and Miku runs off crying. Later, Futaro admits to Yotsuba that he was already aware of Miku’s feelings. The following day, Itsuki tries to get closer to Futaro. Nino confronts Miku, saying that she will use this opportunity to make Futaro hers if Miku gives up. Miku admits that she's scared she's not good enough for Futaro. Itsuki tells Yotsuba to tell Futaro the truth, that Yotsuba is "Rena".

Nino convinces Miku to stand up for herself. Ichika, disguised as Miku, asks Futaro about meeting Rena six years ago. After reminiscing, Futaro stops her, explaining that he knows her real identity, and that she was the "Miku" from before too. She admits she’s actually "Rena", but Futaro doesn't believe her. The girls decide to leave the activities to chance for the following day. Knowing which course Futaro is taking, Ichika gets Miku to take it. The sisters try to get Futaro and Miku alone. Itsuki again asks Yotsuba about telling Futaro the truth. Nino apologizes to Ichika and the two reconcile. Miku makes what Futaro assumes to be a confession until she points behind him, revealing her sisters and causing him to run off. Miku thanks the girls and they re-connect. Later, when Ichika apologizes to Futaro, she kisses him on the cheek and says everything was "a lie". Five years later, as the sisters look through a photo album, Futaro and the bride are about to seal their vows with a kiss. One of the sisters reveals that the couple had their first kiss while staying at their grandfather's inn. Privately, Futaro reminisces about that same day when she became special to him.
