The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (abbreviated RHOBH) is an American reality television series that premiered on October 14, 2010, on Bravo. Developed as the sixth installment of The Real Housewives franchise, it has aired eleven seasons and focuses on the personal and professional lives of several women residing in Beverly Hills, California.

The cast of the current eleventh season consists of Kyle Richards, Lisa Rinna, Erika Girardi, Dorit Kemsley, Garcelle Beauvais, Sutton Stracke, and Crystal Kung Minkoff, while Kathy Hilton currently serves as a friend of the housewives. Previous cast members include original housewives Camille Grammer, Taylor Armstrong, Adrienne Maloof, Kim Richards, and Lisa Vanderpump; and subsequent housewives Brandi Glanville, Yolanda Hadid, Carlton Gebbia, Joyce Giraud, Eileen Davidson, Kathryn Edwards, Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave, and Denise Richards.

The success of the show resulted in the creation of the spin-off Vanderpump Rules.

Overview and casting[]

Seasons 1–4[]

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills was announced in March 2010 as the sixth installment of The Real Housewives franchise.[1] The first season premiered on October 14, 2010, and starred Kyle Richards, Adrienne Maloof, Kim Richards, Lisa Vanderpump, Camille Grammer and Taylor Armstrong.[2] The series received a 2011 Critics Choice Award for best reality series.[3]

The second season premiered on September 5, 2011, with Brandi Glanville and Dana Wilkey introduced as a friend of the housewives.[4] The second season was re-edited after the death of Taylor Armstrong's husband, Russell Armstrong, who committed suicide on August 15, 2011.[5] Grammer left the main cast after the second season.

The third season aired on November 5, 2012. Glanville was upgraded as a main cast member and Yolanda Foster was added to the series. Marisa Zanuck and Faye Resnick were introduced as a friend of the housewives, while Grammer was downgraded as a friend.[6][7] Adrienne Maloof did not return for the fourth season after she didn't attend the season three reunion.[8]

The fourth season premiered on November 4, 2013, with Carlton Gebbia and Joyce Giraud joining the cast. Armstrong was demoted to a guest role.[9][10] Giraud and Gebbia were not asked back after the fourth season.[11]

Seasons 5–8[]

The fifth season premiered on November 18, 2014, featuring Lisa Rinna and Eileen Davidson as the new housewives.[12] Maloof, Grammer and Armstrong appeared in the season as guests.[13] Kim Richards and Glanville were not asked back for the sixth season as regular cast members.[14][15]

Erika Girardi and Kathryn Edwards joined the show's sixth season which premiered on December 1, 2015. Kim Richards, Grammer, Armstrong, Resnick, Maloof and Glanville returned in guest appearances, alongside Bethenny Frankel of The Real Housewives of New York City.[16] The season served as the final season for Hadid, and the only season for Edwards.[17][18]

The seventh season premiered on December 6, 2016, with new cast member, Dorit Kemsley. Eden Sassoon joined the show in a recurring capacity whilst Kim Richards and Grammar also made regular appearances throughout the season.[19] Davidson and Sassoon left the series after the seventh season.[20][21]

The eighth season premiered on December 19, 2017, with the addition of Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave as a new cast member. Grammer returned as a friend of the housewives, while Davidson, Resnick and Maloof appeared as guests.[22][23]

Seasons 9–present[]

The ninth season premiered on February 12, 2019. It featured all six cast members from the previous season, with Denise Richards joining the cast. Grammer returned once again as a friend of the housewives, while Kim Richards, Glanville and Resnick appeared as guests.[24] Vanderpump exited the show after the ninth season.[25]

Garcelle Beauvais joined the tenth season as a main cast member, which premiered on April 15, 2020. While Sutton Stracke debuted as a friend of the housewives.[26] Grammer, Kim Richards, Maloof, Glanville, Davidson and Resnick also made guest appearances during the season.[27][28][29] Denise Richards announced her departure from the show after the tenth season, while Mellencamp was fired.[30][31]

The eleventh season which premiered on May 19, 2021, features Crystal Kung Minkoff joining the show and Stracke joining the main cast after previously being featured as a friend of the housewives.[32] Kathy Hilton joins as a "friend of the housewives."[33] Former housewife Mellencamp Arroyave made a guest appearance in the season.[34]

Broadcast history[]

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills airs regularly on Bravo in the United States;[35] most episodes are approximately forty-two to forty-four minutes in length,[36] and are broadcast in standard definition and high definition.[37] Since its premiere, the series has alternated airing on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings and has been frequently shifted between the 8:00, 9:00, and 10:00 PM timeslots.[35]

In popular culture[]

  • The music video for Lady Gaga's 2014 song "G.U.Y." features then-cast members from the series.[38]
  • In 2019, a screen cap from the Season 2 episode "Malibu Beach Party from Hell" began trending as the "Woman yelling at a cat" meme, featuring cast members Taylor Armstrong and Kyle Richards followed by a picture of a cat sitting at a dinner table.[39][40][41]
  • Brandi Glanville, Kyle Richards and Camille Grammer appeared in the 2014 comedy film The Hungover Games, making cameo roles as Housewives.[42]
  • In 2021, Brandi Glanville joined RHOA star, Kenya Moore and RHOP star, Candiace Dillard in a parody of the Real Housewives franchise on show called, Family Reunion,[43]
