The School for Good and Evil is an upcoming young adult[11][12] fantasy film[13][14] directed by Paul Feig. Based on Soman Chainani's 2013 novel of the same name, it will be produced by Joe Roth, Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, Jane Startz, Laura Fischer and Feig while screenplay is written by David Magee, Laura Solon, Malia Scotch Marmo and Chainani. It follows the adventures of best friends Sophie and Agatha who are kidnapped to the School for Good and Evil. After their fortunes are reversed, Sophie and Agatha try to figure out a way to return home and their friendship is put to the test. It is set to be released in 2022 on Netflix.

The film will star Sofia Wylie as Agatha and Sophia Anne Caruso as Sophie. Originally, Roth Films partnered with Jane Startz Productions to acquire rights to the film. Universal Pictures won the auction but Netflix took over in 2020. Production began in 2021 at Belfast and wrapped later that year.

Development and pre-production[]

"To have one of your favorite directors adapt your book into a film for Netflix is an honor and a dream. Paul Feig is a brilliant filmmaker and a master of tone — a perfect fit for the twists and turns of The School For Good & Evil. I have no doubt that he will make a true fairy tale classic."

Soman Chainani[30]

In 2011, a film adaptation based on The School for Good and Evil series had reportedly been considered by studios.[31][32] Shortly after the publication of the first book of the series, Roth Films partnered with Jane Startz Productions to acquire rights to produce a film based on the book.[33] Universal Pictures won the auction in a seven-figure deal for book and scriptwriting fees. Roth, Startz and Palak Patel were appointed producers and Chainani and Malia Scotch Marmo were set to write the screenplay.[34][35][36] In July 2015, Chainani stated he and Marmo finished writing the script.[37]

After the film languished in development hell,[32] Netflix announced that it would be taking over in May 2020. Paul Feig joined as director and Roth, Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, Startz, Laura Fischer and Feig were reported to be producing. Zack Roth, Patricia Riggens and Chainani were appointed executive producers. David Magee and Laura Solon also were set to be writing the screenplay.[7] Feig stated he was "truly excited to bring this amazing, touching, funny, and empowering world that Soman created in his wonderful books to life."[30]

Casting[]

Fiona Weir was appointed casting director.[38] On November 6, 2020, Weir opened casting for "teenage girl[s] with albinism".[39] Most casting announcements were made by Feig via Twitter. On December 18, 2020, Sophia Anne Caruso and Sofia Wylie had been cast as the leads in the film.[40][41] On February 19, 2021, Kerry Washington and Charlize Theron were announced to both play supporting roles in the film.[42][43] On March 12, 2021, Laurence Fishburne and Michelle Yeoh were cast as the School Master and Professor Emma Anemone respectively.[44][45] On March 19, 2021, Jamie Flatters joined the cast as Tedros as well as Kit Young as Rafal.[46] On March 24, 2021, Earl Cave was announced to be playing Hort.[47] On June 9, 2021, Netflix Geeked announced Freya Theodora Parks, Demi Isaac Oviawe and Kaitlyn Akinpelumi had been cast as Hester, Anadil and Dot respectively.[48][49]

Filming and design[]

Designer Dylan McCaughtry helped make, build, and construct sets and props.[50] The School for Good and Evil was filmed at several locations in Belfast, Northern Ireland, including Belfast Harbour Studios,[51] St Peter's Church,[52] and Loop Film Studios.[53][54][55] Derry was also considered as a filming location but was rejected for "a number of reasons".[56][57] Production was estimated to take approximately four to seven months, following the British Film Commission safe working protocols.[58][59] In January 2021, it was reported filming had begun.[60] However, Chainani stated filming would begin in April 2021.[9][61] At Belfast Harbour Studios, Netflix used the full 125,000 sq ft of the studio, workshop and office space.[62] Roughly 350 to 500 crew members worked on The School for Good and Evil, the majority of whom were locals.[63][64] Artist Robinson, who had previously worked with Feig, served as first assistant director.[65] In May 2021, filming wrapped for Washington and Theron.[66][67][68] By the end of July 2021, production had wrapped.[32][69] The film is expected to generate £30 million for the economy of Northern Ireland.[70]

Marketing[]

On May 18, 2021, three first-look images were posted on Washington, Theron and Feig's social medias, featuring the formers dressed in their respective roles.[71][72][73] Hundreds of responses were posted on Twitter; fans were impressed and conveyed desires for sequels.[74] On June 9, 2021, during Netflix's virtual fan event, Geek Week, the first teaser was released which presented a coven of witches walking towards the screen. Collider remarked Netflix "might be looking to its next big hit" due to the cast.[17]

Release[]

The film was initially slated for release in Christmas 2017.[37] In December 2020, Chainani revealed the film is set to be released in 2022.[75]
