Story[]

Straker allows a UFO to land in England in the hope of sending out SHADO's mobile operatives to capture it and its occupants. However, the UFO self-destructs and a lone alien wanders away into the surrounding woodlands, where he kills a game warden who stumbles on the UFO. At the same time, in a cottage close to the landing site, Liz Newton is conspiring with her lover Cass Fowler to murder Liz's husband, Jack. Liz plans to shoot Jack upon his arrival at home and then claim that she thought him to be an intruder. To that end Cass coaches her in the details of her alibi and it's made clear that he is the driving force in the plan. However, their scheme is foiled when the alien suddenly appears at the front door and is shot instead.

Foster and his investigation team arrive and Foster has the pair taken to SHADO headquarters, where they are given the amnesia drug to make them forget the shooting of the alien and everything that occurred in the previous twelve hours.

Meanwhile Foster investigates the cottage. Jack returns and is questioned by Foster, who then deduces the couple's murderous plan. Straker points out that they cannot share this information with the authorities as they would want to know how SHADO obtained it in the first place. Foster understands that SHADO must remain secret as its mission is to protect everyone on Earth even if it means failing to save an individual life but this does not sit well with him. He comments that Liz and Cass will simply try to kill Jack again, having lost the memory of their first attempt. The final shot shows Liz in the near future looking at Jack's grave: the second attempt on Jack's life was successful. [4]
