The Tournament is a British television game show, first broadcast on 8 November 2021. It is screened on BBC One, produced by QITV and hosted by Alex Scott.[1]

Gameplay[]

In each episode there are eight contestants. After the opening multiple choice round there are a series of 'knockout' rounds, by which the number of players is reduced from eight to four to two, until only one player remains. The last player remaining wins the episode.

Round 1[]

The first round consists of eight multiple-choice general knowledge questions, each question having four possible answers. The same questions are answered by all players. At the end of the round, the players are put in a leaderboard. Positions are determined by how many questions each player got correct, and if there is a tie, the player who get them right in the quickest time is placed higher. Each position on the leaderboard is assigned an amount of money to take into the game. From first place to last place the cash amounts are £500, £350, £300, £250, £200, £150, £100, £10.

Round 2[]

The player in first position picks an opponent and a question category to take on in a head-to-head round on 'the run'. Each head-to-head round lasts for two minutes and consists of a series of rapid-fire questions. Each player begins with eight 'steps' behind them on the run. If a player buzzes in and answers a question first and correctly, one of their opponents' steps moves to their side and they gain a lead. If a player buzzes in and answers a question incorrectly, it is thrown over to their opponent who has the chance to steal the point. There are three possible ways that a head-to-head can end:

  • Tie – if after two minutes both players have eight steps behind them, the game goes into 'extra time'. Tie-breaker questions are asked until one player gets a right answer and wins the round.
  • Win – if after two minutes one player is in the lead, they win the round.
  • Knockout – if one player is able to take an eight step lead, leaving their opponent with no remaining steps, they have achieved a knockout. The round ends after a knockout.

The winning player takes the money of their eliminated opponent and adds it to their cash total. If they achieve a knockout they receive a £500 bonus.

In Round 2 there are four head-to-heads with the eight players. Whoever is at the top of the leaderboard has the advantage, and gets to pick their opponent and category.

Round 3[]

There are two head-to-heads with the four remaining players. Rules are the same as Round 2.

Final[]

In the final the two remaining players go head to head to determine the episode's winner. In the final the players are only playing for their money, they do not also win that of their opponent.[2]
