On January 11, 2021, it was announced that A24 has global rights of The Whale, a film that will be directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Brendan Fraser.[5][3][6] In February 2021, Hong Chau, Sadie Sink and Samantha Morton joined the cast.[7] On March 4, 2021 Ty Simpkins joined the cast.[8] Sathya Sridharan also joined the cast.[4]

Principal photography began on March 8 and concluded on April 7, 2021 in Newburgh, New York. The film entered post-production in the same month.[9][10]

In an interview with Newsweek in June, Fraser revealed that the film was "already in the can" and that his role included "a lot of make-up and prosthetics."[11]
