Thompson Valley High School (TVHS) is located at 1669 Eagle Drive in Loveland, Colorado. Its mascot is the golden eagle. It is one of five high schools in the Thompson R2-J School District, along with Loveland High School, Mountain View High School, Harold Ferguson High School, and Berthoud High School.[3]
Athletics[]
Thompson Valley hosts 24 varsity sports,[4] as well as a club hockey team, and a water polo team, which have not been declared varsity sports.
Cheerleading[]
In the 2009–10 cheer season the team won first place in the 4A State Championships in Colorado and fourth place at regionals. The previous year, they placed 13th at state. The 1998 co-ed squad won the CHSAA 5A Co-Ed State Championship.
Cross country[]
In 2006 the women's team claimed their first state title, followed by a second-place finish in 2007, another state championship in 2008, and a second-place finish in 2009.
In 2010, the boys placed second as a team in state, and the girls placed fourth.
Men's swimming and diving[]
The early years[]
The TVHS men's swimming and diving team has had a great amount of success. The team began under head coach Dick Hewson. It took first place in the Northern Conference race in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1983.
1990–1999[]
Dick Hewson retired after the 1991 season, and his son Tom Hewson took over the head coaching position. In 1993 the team re-claimed the conference title for the first time in ten years. The following year, the team captured the 5A state title, only the second state title in any sport in the school's history. In 1995 and 1996, the team took second place each year at the state meet, finishing behind crosstown rival Loveland High School. In 1997, the team claimed their second team title at the Class 4A state meet. In 1998, the team won the meet by one point to take the first back to back state championship in school history.
2000–present[]
The team won conference titles in 2001-2007. It claimed second place in the Class 5A state meet in 2002 and won the state title in 2005–2007. After the 2005 season, Tom Hewson retired, and former TVHS swimmer Steve Foster took over the head coaching position. After the 2007 state championship, Foster resigned from the head coaching position to pursue his master's degree. Under the coaching of Ryan Howard in 2008, the streak ended, the team placed second in conference behind Silver Creek, and took sixth place at state. After the season, Howard left the team, and the head coaching position was taken over by Kayli Changstrom.
In 2009 Coach Changstrom led the boys' swim and dive team to a Northern Conference finish and a successful run at the state meet. The divers, under the coaching of Amon McCrary, led the team with a 1, 2, 3 finish at state, and a 10th-place finish overall.
Girls' swimming[]
History[]
Men's coach Dick Hewson also helped the girls win conference titles in 1986,1987,1988,1989, and 1991, as well as a state title in 1991, before his retirement after the season. Tom Hewson took over the girls' team for his father, and won conference titles in 1993, 1994, and 1995. Tom retired from the girls' head coaching position, but remained the boys' team coach.
The job was filled by Kris Ayers, who led the team to a conference title in 2002 before retiring following the season.
Trevor Timmons took over the team and won conference titles in 2005 and 2007. After deciding to accept an administration job in another district, Timmons resigned after the 2007 season.
Assistant coach Maria Strait took over the head position when Timmons left, but after the 2008 season took the head coaching position at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.
In 2009 Kayli Changstrom, a TVHS alumni and former eagle swimmer, took over the program and has had tremendous results. In 2009 Coach Changstrom helped lead the Lady Eagles to their first of many Northern Conference titles and to a second-place finish at the Colorado 4A State Swim and Dive Championships in 2009.
In 2010 the Lady Eagles and Coach Changstrom won their first 4A state title on February 13, 2010 with 330 points.[5]
Since that time the Lady Eagles have won additional Northern Conference titles in 2011, 2012, and 2013, while also winning in state championships, for four consecutive Colorado 4A State swim and dive titles.
Track and field[]
The same cross country runners on the girls' 2006, and 2007 teams came back for national titles in the girls' 4A division.
Men's tennis[]
Exchange student Martin Cobo gave the school and the city its first individual #1 Singles state champion ever in the fall of 2006.
Women's tennis[]
The women's tennis team took home regional wins in 2009, 2010, and 2011, with a third-place finish from the #3 doubles team in 2010 and a second-place finish at the #1 doubles team in 2012.
Volleyball[]
Head coach Nathan Fristed was hired in 2008, and since then the Eagles volleyball program has enjoyed a considerable amount of success.
In 2008 the Eagles earned their way into the postseason and lost to Berthoud HS at Districts. Their season record was 11–10.
In 2009 finished their season at Districts, losing to Prairie View HS. Their season record was 17–5.
In 2010 the Eagles were ranked #1 in Denver Post 4A season polls and won their school's first Northern Conference Championship. In that same year the Eagles won their second District title, and, at Regionals, earned their first trip to the 4A State Championships. In 2010 Eagle volleyball finished 5th in state. Their season record was 23–5.
In 2011 the Eagles had another successful season, finishing third in Northern Conference and again earning a trip to Districts, where they were defeated by Green Mountain. Their season record was 17–6.
In 2012 the Eagles finished second in Northern Conference and had a MaxPreps Freeman Ranking of 6th in 4A. They hosted and won their Regional, earning them their second trip to Colorado 4A State Championships in school history. Again, the Eagles finished fifth in state after losing to Lewis Palmer. Their season record was 23–5.
In 2013 the Eagles again finished second in Northern Conference, losing at Regionals to Roosevelt HS. Their season record was 15–11.
Wrestling[]
The men's wrestling team has also had some success in recent years, winning a few district and conference titles.
Football[]
In 2015 the varsity football team was spotlighted in Michelle Lambert's music video Warrior.[6]
