Tomas Lían Romero Keubler (born 19 December 2000) is a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC. Born in the United States, he plays for the El Salvador national team.

Career[]

Youth[]

Romero enrolled in the Philadelphia Union's YSC Academy since he was in eight grade and has steadily worked his way up through the youth ranks eventually being called up to Bethlehem Steel FC matchday 18 roster.[1]

In December 2017, Romero committed to playing college soccer for Georgetown University starting in 2019.[2][3] In December 2019, he made the game-winning penalty save in the D1 National Championship, to lead the Georgetown Hoyas to their first National Title in soccer.

Club[]

Bethlehem Steel FC[]

On 1 April 2017, Romero made his professional debut for Bethlehem Steel on the opening day of the 2017 season against the Rochester Rhinos. While Steel lost the game, Romero became the youngest goalkeeper to make an appearance in a USL regular season match at only 16 years old.[4]

Los Angeles FC[]

In January 2021, Romero's MLS homegrown rights were traded from Philadelphia to Los Angeles FC in exchange for $50,000 in general allocation money.[5] Romero officially signed his first professional contract with LAFC on 1 February 2021.[6] On June 23, 2021, Romero made his MLS debut with LAFC in a 2-0 win over FC Dallas, keeping a clean sheet.

International[]

Romero is eligible for the United States through birth and upbringing, and for El Salvador through descent. He has been playing with the El Salvador national under-17 team since August 2016.[7] Since then Romero was called up again for El Salvador's participation in the 2017 CONCACAF U-17 Championship in Panama.

On May 31, 2021, the Salvadoran Football Federation released a statement that Romero had declined an invitation to the El Salvador senior team because he wanted to maintain the possibility of playing for the United States.[8] He formally debuted for the senior El Salvador national team in a friendly 1–1 tie with Ecuador on 5 November 2021.[9]
