Tonj North County is an administrative area in Warrap State, South Sudan. [1][2]

Administrative divisions

Tonj North is divided into 9 Payams previously before the creation of 32 states. However, when Tonj State was part of 32 states, the former payams of Tonj North were upgraded to County statuses. However, Tonj State government had split Warrap County into Warrap and Awul Counties and Lou Ariik was further divided into Lou and Majak Counties. When President Salva Kiir dissolved the 32 states all the Counties got reduced to Payams however, it remained not clear whether Majak and Warrap shall remain as independent Payams or they may absorb to their former administrative areas, they were not Payams during the past ten states of South Sudan.

Tonj North County is divided into:

  1. Alabek Payam
  2. Akop Payam
  3. Awul Payam
  4. Kirik Payam
  5. Aliek Payam
  6. Manloor Payam
  7. Marial Lou Payam
  8. Pagol Payam
  9. Rualbet Payam

The dispute over the two names of Alabek and Lou Ariik in Lou Payam:

Lou Ariik is sometimes called as Lou Mawien. The naming of the area was disputed in the beginning for the payam but it was resolved that the place be named as Lou Payam with its headquarters at Alabek Town. It is a territory of one single community with many clans and sections connected to each other in their cultures and settlements. They are bordered to the north by the Unity State's Mayom County, Akop to the east, Rualbet to south, Konggor to the west and Gogrial East to the northwest.
