Torquato Cardilli
Torquato Cardilli (born November 24, 1942) was an Italian diplomat. He was born in L'Aquila province in Italy.[1] Cardilli graduated with a degree in oriental culture and languages and in political sciences from the Istituto Universitario Orientale of Naples. He was first appointed at the Italian Foreign Ministry’s political office in 1967.[2]
While studying Arabic in Jerusalem in 1964 he converted to Islam, however, this has only become public during his tenure as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia when Saudi media initially erroneously reported Cardilli would have just converted in Saudi Arabia.[3]
