Budget€3.4 million[1]

Tove[a] is a 2020 Finnish biographical film of Swedo-Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson, creator of the Moomins, played by Alma Pöysti. The film was written by Eeva Putro, and directed by Zaida Bergroth.[2][3]

The film's budget was €3.4 million, which makes it the second most expensive film in Finland after the 2017 version of The Unknown Soldier.[1] It was released to critical acclaim, and was selected as the Finnish entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards, but was not nominated.[4][5]

Plot[]

The movie centres on the early life of Tove Jansson, dating back to her life from the wartime to the mid-1950s, showing both her personal relationships with people such as Vivica Bandler and Atos Wirtanen, and the creation of the Moomin characters, and the popular book series.[6][7]

Release[]

The film was released in Finland on 2 October 2020.[10]

Reception[]

Tove has been very well received by critics. Variety describes the lead performance by actress Alma Pöysti as “mesmerizing“. They add that she “excels in her first leading film role and strongly resembles the real Tove.” As her fifth feature film, Variety says Zaida Bergroth’s directing “beguiles audiences into the world of its characters” and thinks that she “flexes her considerable cinematic powers, conjuring vibrantly expressive visuals and confident performances from her talented cast.”[11]

The film got seven Jussi Awards, including Best Film and Best Actress, the latter for Alma Pöysti as Tove Jansson.[12]
