Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque

Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque is a 1943 oil on canvas painting of Kutubiyya Mosque by the then British prime minister Winston Churchill, and given to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and has been called "Churchill's most important work".

It was painted in January 1943 after the Casablanca Conference, and is the only painting by Churchill during the Second World War.[1] He painted it on the balcony of the city's .[2] It was given to President Franklin D. Roosevelt later that year for his birthday.[1][2]

It was inherited by his son Elliott Roosevelt. It was acquired by George W. Woodward of Nebraska, in 1950, then by Norman G. Hickman of New York, in 1964, and stayed in the family until it was placed with M.S. Rau Antiques of New Orleans in 2011.[3]

In 2011, it was bought by the actress Angelina Jolie at a sale in New Orleans.[2]

In March 2021, it was sold at a Christie's auction for £8.285 million, a record for the artist.[1][3] It was described as "Churchill's most important work" by a Christie's spokesperson.[2]
