The Toyota Corolla Cross is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automaker Toyota using the Corolla nameplate.[5] It was first unveiled in Thailand on 9 July 2020 as a more practical and larger alternative to the C-HR and built on the same TNGA-C platform as the E210 series Corolla.[3][4][6][7] The Corolla Cross is positioned between the C-HR and RAV4 within Toyota's crossover SUV lineup.[4]

Overview

2021 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 Hybrid SEG (ZVG10; Colombia)

The Corolla Cross is the second Toyota crossover built on the TNGA-C platform, after the smaller C-HR which was launched in 2016. The Corolla Cross shares the same 2,640 mm (103.9 in) wheelbase as the C-HR, but occupies a larger footprint. Compared to the C-HR, the Corolla Cross focuses on interior space and practicality.[8] For the front-wheel drive models, it come with a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear suspension instead of an independent rear suspension used on the regular Corolla and the C-HR to save interior space and cut costs.[9] The all-wheel drive models still come with rear independent units.

The interior is shared with the regular Corolla, with minor redesigns.[10] It offers a claimed boot space of 487 L (17.2 cu ft) if equipped with a puncture repair kit, and 440 L (16 cu ft) with a temporary spare tyre.[11]

The conventional petrol model uses a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FE regular/2ZR-FBE flex fuel or a 2.0-litre M20A-FKS regular/M20A-FKB flex fuel four-cylinder petrol engines that produces 103 kW (138 hp; 140 PS) at 6,000 rpm and 177 N⋅m (131 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm and 126–130 kW (169–174 hp; 171–177 PS) at 6,600 rpm and 207–210 N⋅m (153–155 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,400–4,800 rpm respectively, while hybrid variants gets the 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 72 kW (97 hp; 98 PS) at 5,200 rpm and 142 N⋅m (105 lb⋅ft) of torque at 3,600 rpm paired with an eCVT and works together with a 6.5-Ah nickel-metal hydride battery as well as an 1NM AC synchronous electric motor rated at 53 kW (71 hp; 72 PS) and 163 N⋅m (120 lb⋅ft) to provide a total system output of 90 kW (121 hp; 122 PS).

As of June 2021, the Corolla Cross is produced in Thailand, Taiwan, and Brazil. However, Toyota Australia has confirmed that it will import the vehicle from Japan from late 2022.[12] Production in the US and South Africa will also start in late 2021.[13][14]

Locally manufactured in Sorocaba plant, the Corolla Cross debuts with a direct-injected 2.0-litre flex fuel engine for XR and XRE grade levels, and the 1.8-litre hybrid flex fuel configuration for XRV and XRX grade levels.[23] Toyota targeted the hybrid version to contribute 30 percent of Corolla Cross total sales in the country.[24] It is also exported to 22 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.[25]

United States

The Corolla Cross for the United States was unveiled on 2 June 2021.[26][13] The vehicle will be offered in L, LE, and XLE trim levels, with an all-wheel drive system available as an option.[27] All will be powered by the 2.0 L M20A-FKSDynamic Forcestraight-four engine (I4) paired with the K120 “Direct Shift” continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Direct Shift CVT includes a physical first gear (known as a "launch gear") and nine additional simulated gears, for a total of ten. The launch gear is engaged when the car takes off from being stopped and transitions to the belt drive once the car picks up speed. The benefit of this system is that traditional CVTs tend to have low efficiency in lower gear ratios (creating a moment of sluggishness when starting from a stop).[28] Since belts are handling a more narrow band of gear ratios, belt angles and loads can be reduced, increasing shift speeds and offering a 6% improvement in fuel efficiency.[29]

The Corolla Cross for the US market will be first vehicle to be built at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing USA in Huntsville, Alabama, which is expected to begin production in December 2021.
