Trapezitsa (Bulgarian: Трапезица) is a medieval stronghold located on a hill with the same name in Veliko Tarnovo in northern Bulgaria.
History[]
During the Second Bulgarian Empire the first castle of the Asen dynasty was built on the hill.[1] In the following years Boyars and Orthodox clerics lived on the hill. The Monastery of St Ivan Rilski (John of Rila) was located in this fortress.[2] The relics of the Saint were kept there until 1495.[3]
Recovery[]
Since the 1970s the Bulgarian government has had plans for the restoration of the historical hill. In 2009 the south watchtower was restored.[4]
