Ube Shrine (宇倍神社, Ube-jinja) is a Shinto shrine in Tottori, Tottori Prefecture, Japan.[1] The shrine having been the most renowned shrine in the province is famous for its many benefits including the protection of children, prosperity, and longevity of life. The main building of the shrine was once printed on the 5-yen banknote.[2]
History[]
Founded in 648 according to shrine tradition. The present main shrine building dates from 1898.[3] Ube was designated as the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) for the former Inaba province. [4]
From 1871 through 1946, Ube was officially designated one of the Kokuhei Chūsha (国幣中社), meaning that it stood in the second rank of national government supported shrines.
