University High School of Science and Engineering (UHSSE) is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math magnet high school located in Hartford, Connecticut.[citation needed] This public school was started in 2004, with a small body of faculty, headed by principal Dr Elizabeth Colli, and a freshman class of one hundred students.
The school has changed locations since its inception. It was previously located on the Asylum campus of the University of Hartford on Elizabeth Street in Hartford, but is now in a brand new facility on Mark Twain Drive on the main campus in Hartford.[citation needed]
Some courses offered to freshmen include Conceptual Physics and Introduction to Engineering Design. All engineering courses are Project Lead the Way and all courses are honors level or higher; Advanced Placement courses are available in Biology, and Language and Composition. The school is affiliated with the University of Hartford through a partnership. University of Hartford college credit courses are also offered to students free of charge as well as University of Connecticut Early College Experience courses in English, Calculus I, Statistics and Probability, Chemistry, and History.
UHSSE's robotics team, the Dragons, have participated in the National FIRST Robotics Competition' since 2007. The team meets after school on a regular basis and is supervised by an engineering teacher at the school. The team is completely student run. The Dragons have won two events, the 2014 Groton District Event and the 2017 WPI District Event.[citation needed]
Every year, incoming freshmen name their class. For example, the Class of 2017 is the Deca Class, as they are the tenth graduating class. Other examples include: Dynasty, Prodigy, Infinity, and Legendary.
In 2014, the school had a 100% graduation rate.
