The University of Hradec Králové (in Czech Univerzita Hradec Králové, in Latin Universitas Reginaegradecensis) is a public university founded on June 21, 2000. It traces its roots back to 1959. About 6,500 students attend the university. It belongs to one of the most important education and research institutions in the Eastern Bohemia.

The current rector of the university is prof. Ing. Kamil Kuča, Ph.D.[1]

History[]

The University of Hradec Králové (known as UHK) is a public university with a quite interesting history.

First known information of the teachers´ training in Czech lands is dated back to 1775. Then it took some time to form an official institution. It happened exactly in 1959 when the Institute of Education in Hradec Králové was established and could produce new teachers for elementary level students who were till then educated in high schools. It did not take long and the Faculty of Education in Hradec Králové was born in 1964.

Training for all education levels was enabled after higher education reform in Czechoslovakia in 1976.

The Velvet Revolution took its place in 1989 and some of the former staff from 1968 came back to the faculty. Ever since the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, it opened up new ways and international cooperation has been born.

In 1992 the Pedagogical University of Hradec Králové was officially established!

On February 15, 1993 the university started expanding and a new faculty was added to the unit. It was the Faculty of Management and Information Technologies, which was renamed the Faculty of Informatics and Management in 2000. The same year when the University of Hradec Králové was set as the official name.

On September 1, 2005 the Faculty of Arts, later known as the Philosophical Faculty, was commenced as the third faculty of the university.

Five years later, on September 1, 2010, after the transformation of the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Science was formed.

Hradec Králové experienced many reconstructions and the university was part of them.

First, the modern building called the Building of Common Education (Objekt společné výuky) was awarded by Czech architects as "The Building of Year" in 1998.

Second, long expected and high-technology building of the Faculty of Informatics and Management (FIM) which required an investment of 360 million CZK was finished in 2008. It is situated next to the Building of Common Education.

Third, the Faculty of Science (PřF) was built in 2016. The construction took only 21 months in total and the final cost was approx. 450 million CZK. Located next to the FIM.

All three buildings are located in one spot that is in general called “Na Soutoku Campus”. These days UHK is not falling behind. Since 2020, there is an ongoing reconstruction of the Philosophical Faculty building (FF), the institution is now temporarily moved to Vít Nejedlý Street. Another big reconstruction is just behind the corner where the Faculty of Education (PdF) should start its revitalization in the year 2021.

Currently the university consists of the following 4 units:

  • Faculty of Education

The long-term strategic mission of the university is not only to enhance its internal structure, but also to focus on investment projects which are efficiently carried out by a gradual construction of the university campus in the Na Soutoku area.[2] The upcoming plans include a construction of a building for natural and social science specialization with laboratories that will complete and close up the center of a newly emerging campus.

In 2010, a brand new unified professional visual style[3] was introduced that presents the university as a modern, dynamic institution.

All parts of the university are located in Hradec Králové, capital of the Hradec Králové Region.

UHK offers accommodation for incoming students from around the world as well as for the local ones. Palach Halls of Residence (Palachovy koleje) [1] and Vít Nejedlý Halls of Residence (Koleje Víta Nejedlého) [2] have capacity over 900 beds.[3]

Palach Halls of Residence are partly under ongoing renovation in order to provide comfort to all students living there.

Statutory emblem is made up by a central crowned Czech lion[5] looking heraldically left and holding in its forepaws large "G" letter. The figure also represents a part of the city of Hradec Králové emblem. In the circular inscription the full title of the university in Latin is written.
