The University of West Attica (UniWA; Greek: Πανεπιστήμιο Δυτικής Αττικής is a newly established university located in Aigaleo, near Athens, Greece. It was established in 2018 as a result of the merger of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens and the Piraeus University of Applied Sciences, while in 2019 the National School of Public Health[1] (NSPH) joined the newly established university.

Today it is the third largest university in Greece, while it is considered the fastest growing higher education institution in the country and one of the fastest growing university institutions in all of southeastern Europe.[citation needed]

History[]

The University of West Attica (UniWA) was founded in March 2018 by the National Law 4521. The foundation of the newly established University came from the merging process of the former Technological Educational Institute of Athens and Piraeus University of Applied Sciences. In 2019, the National School of Public Health joined the newly established university.The first two have been in operation for 45 years since their establishment, of which almost 20 years in Higher Education. The National School of Public Health was originally founded by Eleftherios Venizelos as the Athens School of Health in 1929 and in 1994 took its current name.

The university offers contemporary Undergraduate and Postgraduate study programmes.

At UNIWA, there are twenty-seven Departments operating under the academic umbrella of five schools, covering a wide range of scientific fields, such as social, administrative and economic sciences, engineering sciences, health and welfare sciences, as well as food sciences and applied art and culture studies.

UNIWA offers a range of educational and lifelong learning services, including:

  • The undergraduate studies that lead to four-year Bachelor's (Level 6) and five-year Engineering Diploma degrees, with Ιntegrated master (Level 7).
  • Postgraduate studies leading to the completion of a postgraduate diploma (Level 7).
  • Doctoral studies (Level 8).
  • Research laboratories & Postdoctoral research.
  • Lifelong learning and vocational training programmes.

Innovation and research[]

The University of West Attica cooperates with a number of university and research institutes both in Greece and abroad. The university is also an active member of many International organizations, including the United Nations Academic Impact, which is under the auspices of the United Nations. In addition to the university, the University Research Center (URC) was established and operates since 2019, as well as the Port Management and Development Institute, specializing in the design, coordination and implementation of innovative strategic research projects in the ports of Greece. including port zones, as well as related activities. Furthermore, UNIWA is the first "Green University" in Greece, holding not only the highest position of all Greek universities, but also the 487th global position of universities in terms of sustainable development based on their evaluation in 39 indicators according to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. Finally, the university has the modern online news portal entitled: University Dialogues,[33] which is a pioneering project for the Greek academic community and news.

University campus[]

  • The Ancient Grove Campus is located in the Municipality of Egaleo in West Athens, on Str. P. Ralli and Thivon, inside the Ancient Grove area, where the famous "Walking School" of Plato as well as the St. John Church of was built in the eleventh century A.D. The Ancient Olive Grove Campus extends over a total area of 100,000 square meters, while the built-up area exceeds 50,000 square meters. A total of 8 buildings have been developed within the campus. The educational activities are carried out in the classrooms and amphitheaters of the university campus.
  • The Egaleo Park Campus is located in the Municipality of Egaleo in West Athens, surrounded by Milou, Ag. Spyridonos, Dimitsanis and Edessis streets. It occupies a total area of about 60 acres. The Egaleo Park Campus includes buildings with a total area of 60,000 square meters, in which some of the Departments and Administrative Services of the university are located. A total of 16 buildings have been developed within the campus. The educational activities are carried out in the classrooms and amphitheaters of the university campus. A conference Center has been developed within the Egaleo Park Campus. The conference Center comprises the central hall of 455 square meters and 344 seats. The central stage of the conference Center is 55 square meters and includes facilities for different types of events. The library, which is developed within the campus, covers the cognitive, teaching and research needs of both academic staff and students.
  • Athens Campus is located northeast of the center of Athens in the Ampelokipoi area of Athens, at 196 Alexandrou Ave. The official inauguration of the landmark building took place on 16 March 1931. The educational activities are carried out in the classrooms of the university campus.
