Uniview[2] (Chinese: 宇视; abbreviated as UNV[3]), also known as Uniview Technologies,[4] short for Zhejiang Uniview Technologies Co., Ltd.,[5] is a Chinese[6] video surveillance manufacturer[7] founded in 2005, [8] with headquarters in Hangzhou.[9] It was founded by Huawei and 3Com[10] and was once invested in[11] and owned by[12] American private investment firm Bain Capital.[13]

Uniview specializes in surveillance equipment,[14] including IP cameras[15] and network video recorders.[16] In December 2011, [17] its video surveillance unit[18] was bought from Hewlett-Packard[19] by a fund affiliated with Bain Capital.[20]

History[]

Uniview became involved in the video surveillance field in 2005.[21] After being spun off from Hewlett-Packard,[22] it began operating independently in 2011. [23]

Uniview made its way into overseas markets in 2014. [24] In 2016, its revenue reached ¥2.4 billion.[25]

In 2017, it became a reseller and alliance partner of Quantum.[26] In 2018, China TransInfo acquired Uniview[27] from Bain Capital.[28]

Controversies[]

In 2020, Uniview signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the public security bureau of Fuyun County in Xinjiang to launch an "innovation lab".[29]

In November 2020, IPVM alleged that Uniview had developed software designed to track Uyghurs. Uniview responded citing its ethics code and panel and stating that it believes in "Tech for Social Good."[30]
