Vani Bhojan (born 28 October 1988) is an Indian actress and model who predominantly appears and works in Tamil-language television and Tamil and Telugu cinema.[2] Bhojan started her career as an air hostess and worked with Kingfisher Airlines and IndiGo Airlines.[3][4] Bhojan is popularly referred as Chinnathirai Nayanthara.[5][6][7] Among her awards are the Ghalatta Nakshatra Award for small screen to silver screen actress[8] and D Awards & Dazzle Style Icon Awards for enchantress of the year.[9]

Early life and family[]

Vani Bhojan was born on 28 October 1988 in Ooty, Nilgiri District, Tamil Nadu to a Badaga family.[10] She did her schooling in a boarding school in Ooty. Bhojan began her working career as an air hostess with Kingfisher Airlines and then IndiGo, while simultaneously studying for a degree in English Literature through a correspondence program. She then attempted to take on a managerial role at SpiceJet but was eventually not permitted to join as she had not completed her degree and was subsequently left jobless. Bhojan then received an opportunity to work as a model in an advertisement for The Chennai Silks, which led to her receiving acting offers.[11][12]

Acting career[]

Early work and television debut (2010–2016)[]

Bhojan at the Amutha Surabhi Launch Event 2018

Her first appearance as an actress was in 2010, in a minor role in the Tamil horror film Orr Eravuu.[13] In 2012 she appeared in a supporting role in the Tamil film Adigaram 79 and in Jaya TV’s serial Maya. She played the title role of Maya.[14]

"I don’t hold a degree till now. I joined an airlines as staff and started doing BA English Literature in correspondence. After three years when I was about to join as a manager with another airlines I was not allowed to join because I did not finish my degree. I remember the days when there was just 320 rupees in my bank account.”

In 2013, she was cast in the Sun TV series Deivamagal in the leading role.[16] She played Sathya Priya opposite Krishna.[17] The success of this serial gained her several accolades including the Galatta Nakshatra Award, Sun Kudumbam Viruthukal and Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Actress.[8] This serial’s success promoted her to act in Tamil and Telugu films. She was also seen in Lakshmi Vanthachu directed by Suresh Krissna and V. Sathasivam on Zee Tamil,[3] where she played three characters, Nandhini, Lakshmi and Jhansi.[18][19]After the success of Deivamagal, she decided to try her luck in films.[20]

Kollywood and Tollywood debut and break from television (2017–present)[]

In 2017, she was seen in the Telugu film Prema.[21] After having completed Deivamagal and Lakshmi Vanthachu, she appeared as a judge in Asathal Chutties on Sun TV[22] and Kings of Comedy Juniors 2 on Vijay TV along with Robo Shankar and Erode Mahesh.[23] In May 2018, Bhojan announced her debut in N4 and said it will be directed by Lokesh Kumar.[24] However, in the middle of 2019 citing date issues, she stepped out of the film.[25] Consequently, her first appearance in a lead role was in 2019, in the Telugu film Meeku Maathrame Cheptha along with Tharun Bhascker.[2]. In 2020, she debuted in Tamil film Oh My Kadavule opposite to Ashok Selvan.[26][27] which was a success at the box office. She was nominated at Siima for the Best Supporting Actress and won the JFW Awards for Best Supporting Actress. [28] In the same year, she appeared as the lead in the crime thriller film Lock Up along with Vaibhav Reddy, which released on Zee5[29] and the Tamil web series Triples, opposite to Jai, released on Hotstar.[8]

In 2021, she again paired up with Vaibhav Reddy in the ZEE5 film Malaysia to Amnesia.[citation needed] In September, she acted in Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum produced by Suriya's 2D Entertainment, which was released on Amazon Prime.

"For me, television is still big. It is a place where I earned my name as an actor. Films, however, are a different experience. You get to play different characters in a short span of time, which is not the case with TV serials, where a character is played for five consecutive years. The opportunity to play various characters is driving my journey and I’m not interested in joining the popularity race. I don’t want to play that typical heroine character who spends most of the time running around the hero. I want to do interesting roles that challenge me as an actor..

— Vani Bhojan, Times of India, 2020[30]

As of 2021, Bhojan has several projects. She has completed a film directed by Karthik Subbaraj co-starring Vikram titled as Mahaan.[31][32] Other films that she is working on include Anees's Pagaivanuku Arulvai,[33] Barani Sekaran's Thaazh Thiravaa,[34] Karthik Chowdary's Paayum Oli Nee Yenakku,[35] and Mark Joel's Casino.[36] She is also working on an untitled film co-starring Vidharth,[37] and an untitled film co-starring Bharath.[38] She started filming Oor Kuruvi with Kavin under Rowdy Pictures production, which is a village based film.[39] She signed two web series with Arya[40] and Arun Vijay.[41]
