Varman or its variants, Varma, Verma, Varman, Burman or Barman, are surnames that are used in India and southeast Asia.[1]

The surname Varman could be derived from the Thamizh word "Varmam" which means "major nerves, body's pressure points or vital points"

It is believed that the surname Varman is mainly used by 'those who have learned and mastered the art form - Varma Kalai.

Varma kalai (Kalai is a Thamizh word for "art" or art form), is a traditional art of vital points, a martial art form originated in present-day Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu which is either used to heal or harm.

In the Sangam Thamizh period, it is commonly noted that people used the "work or art" in which they are mastered in, as their surname, (e.g) Kaniyan Pungundranar.

According to Radhakanta Deb, the surname is derived from the Sanskrit word for "Shield, Defensive armour".[2][page needed]
