Veeramadevi (transl. The lady warrior) is an upcoming Tamil-language historical drama and war film, written and directed by Vadivudaiyan and produced by Ponse Stephen. The film stars Sunny Leone in her Tamil debut as the eponymous character, alongside Navdeep. Nassar and Srinath appear in supporting roles.[2] Its soundtrack is composed by Amresh Ganesh, who had previous done the same for Charlie Chaplin 2 (2019).

Principal photography for Veeramadevi commenced in February 2018.[1] It is estimated to have a production budget of 100 crore (US$14 million).[1] The film was shot in Tamil.[3] It will be simultaneously released in Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu languages.[1][2]

Production[]

The project started when actress Sunny Leone decided to pursue her filming career to act in a Tamil film after a brief stay from acting in adult films and made her official statement through her Twitter account.[4] The making of Veeramadevi was announced in around December 2017 and the shooting went on floors from February 2018. Reports also revealed that the actress also received a call sheet for 150 days on planning and deciding for the shooting of the film.[5]

The first look poster for the film was unveiled on 18 May 2018, depicting the position of Sunny Leone as a warrior queen.[3] The official trailer of the film was released on 24 April 2018.

Controversy[]

There were issues and protests regarding the portrayal and casting of former porn star Sunny Leone in a titular role which is based on the actual story of Veeramadevi. In October 2018, there were Pro-Kannada protests in Bangalore against casting Sunny Leone as the character of Veeramadevi.[6] A petition was also filed against the filming of Veeramadevi at the Madurai High Court but was later resolved in November 2018.[1]
