Vehicle registration plates of Paraguay

Since the end of the year 2000 Paraguay has required its residents to register their motor vehicles with the National Register of Vehicles (Registro Nacional de Automotores) and to display vehicle registration plates; this system has replaced the former one whereby plates were issued by municipal authorities, who also kept local registers.[1]

The plates are inscribed with a 4-letter and 3-number combination, and remain with the vehicle for its lifetime. Motorcycles are numbered in the same series as cars, but with the letters and numbers group transposed ("nnn XXX").

The now former series "AXX NNN" and "BXX NNN" was used mainly by the central office of the Registry in Asunción, series beginning with other letters were used by regional offices in the interior of the country. "Exx nnn" was reserved for public vehicles which are tax-exempt, the series "Txx nnn" was for agricultural tractors and machinery, the series "Vxx nnn" for antique cars (and "VAP nnn" for those belonging to members of the Circulo de Vehiculos Antiguos del Paraguay).

There are also plates inscribed in black for persons whose occupation or elective position gives them immunity from prosecution, like the "SEN XXX" plates of Senators, "DIP XXX" of Representatives (Diputados), "JMX NNN" for elected municipal council members (Junta Municipal) authorities, and the "PJx nnn" plates indicates official vehicles of judges.

Provisionally, new-registered vehicles may obtain a series starting with P (beginning from "PRX"), which is changed to the formal plate once completed the registration.

2019 Mercosur standard[]

In October 2014 the design of the new license plate to be used by all Mercosur countries was officially presented. This consists of a plate of 15.75 in × 5.12 in (400.05 mm × 130.05 mm), with a white background, the characters and frame in black and a blue band at the top that shows the name of the country, its flag and the Mercosur logo. The typeface used is FE-Schrift. On July 1, 2019, the Mercosur standard license plate was adopted in Paraguay. [2]
