Victor Suthren

Victor Suthren (born March 2, 1942) is a Canadian writer and novelist with an interest in colonial and maritime history.

Career[]

Born in Montreal, Suthren was educated at Bishop's University (BA) and Concordia University (MA) before joining the Civil Service, rising to serve as Director General of the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa (1986-1997) before leaving to pursue a writing career. His attempt to place a Holocaust and genocide gallery in the museum was bitterly opposed by veterans and military historians and failed, but the controversy helped lead to the creation of a new, broader-focused War Museum, Ottawa's National Holocaust Monument and the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg. His recognitions include an Eagle feather from the Mi'kmaq Confederacy, an honorary captaincy in the RCN, the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD) and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal. He is a member of the Captain Cook Society, and an occasional oceanic "tall ship" sailor.[1]
