Violin Sonata No. 3 in E minor "Epica", Op. 57, was composed by Nikolai Medtner from 1935–1938.

Composition[]

The sonata is written in four movements, beginning and ending in the key of E minor. It employs cyclic form. The entire work takes approximately 45 minutes to perform.

  1. Introduzione: Andante meditamenteAllegro. The movement, in E minor, begins with a slow 6/8 introduction which leads into a long sonata form in 6/4 time.
  2. Scherzo: Allegro molto vivace e leggiero. The movement is in common time in A minor.
  3. Andante con moto. A slow movement in F minor and with a 3/4 time signature.
  4. Finale: Allegro molto. The sonata ends with a fast movement in E minor and 3/4 time.
