Vrbětice is a village of Vlachovice (Zlín District) in Czech Republic. It is located in the valley of the river  [Wikidata], about 1.5 km south of Vlachovice and 6 km southwest of Valašské Klobouky. 138 addresses are registered here.[1] Vrbětice is also the name of a cadastral community with an area of 6.16 km2.

History[]

The  [Wikidata] of the village dates back to 1318.[2] Although Vrbětice is in the immediate vicinity of Vlachovice, the village has always belonged to the Hošťálková rule and was at no time subject to Vlachovice. Serf conditions in Vrbětice were very mild. With the exception of forest work, its residents were exempt from forced labour.[3] In the 1620 land register, a hereditary bailiff is documented for the first time in Vrbětice.[4]

In 1850, after the abolition of patrimonial, Vrbětice formed a municipality in the district administration Uherský Brod and the judicial district Valašské Klobouky.[5] The first school was built here in 1882.[6]

In 2014, a series of explosions occurred in a military warehouse in Vrbětice. Presumably, the explosion was caused by the Russian GRU agents.[7]

Demographics[]

In 1927 the population of the village was 401 people.[5] As of 2011, 391 people lived in the village. 208 of them are women.[8]

Notable landmarks[]

  • Timbered wooden bell tower from the 19th century. Cultural monument since 3 May, 1958.[9] It is located in the centre of the village and has been renovated twice — in 1900 and 1965.[10]
  • Mikulc's cross (Czech: Mikulcův kříž) by the road to Vlachovice.[3]
  • Wooden cross in the "Upper Gate" (Czech: Horní bráně).
  • In 1898, the then head teacher Hlobil built a stone cross near the school in memory of his 20th anniversary as a teacher and 100th anniversary of the birth of František Palacký.
  • A memorial to the victims of World War I was built in the park next to the school in 1928 and a memorial to the victims of World War II was added to it in 1945.[3]
