Wampanoag Country Club is a private country club in West Hartford, Connecticut.[1]
History[]
In the mid-1920s, Donald Ross completed the design of the course.[2][3] In 1925, still during construction, it was touted by the Hartford Daily Courant to be "New England finest golf course."[4] William B. Goodwin was the first president of the club.[5] In 1928, Wampanoag announced that they intended to build a clubhouse. It was expected to be constructed within two years.[6] In 1955, a "new era" began as a new clubhouse was constructed.[7] In the mid-20th century, one of the assistant pros was Al Colandro, the father of Mike Colandro, future PGA Tour player.[8] In 1975, the clubhouse was rebuilt.[9]
Wampanoag has hosted many significant golf tournaments. It has hosted the Connecticut Open and Connecticut Amateur several times each.[10][11] In addition, it has hosted a number of significant women's events, including the New England Women's Golf Association (NEWGA) Championship,[12] Connecticut Women's State Amateur Championship,[13] and Connecticut Women's Open.[14]
In recent years, Wampanoag has hosted some benefits. In 2014, the course hosted the University of Hartford Men's and Women's Soccer Golf Tournament to benefit the university's soccer teams.[14] In 2020, Wampanoag hosted the 32nd Annual Golf Tournament for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford to benefit them.[15]
Around 2014, Donny Kirkpatrick became the head pro.[16] In 2020, Ed Hilario became an assistant pro.[16][17] The other assistant pro is Nick Segaline.[16]
