Waterfalls, Harare

Waterfalls is a low density, mixed use residential suburb in the southern region of Harare, Zimbabwe.

History[]

The southwest Harare suburbs, were initially set up by the Huggins government from the 1930s onwards, as both an industrial and working class area. Residents are mainly working-class, although many lower middle class people call Waterfalls home. Waterfalls has a light industrial section that includes transport and chemical production.[1]

By the mid-2010s, the number of people squatting in informal settlements was growing in the adjacent area of .[2]

Layout[]

The neighbourhoods within Waterfalls are Derbyshire, Grobbie Park, Houghton Park, Induna Park, Midlands, Mainway Meadows, Malvern (named after Godfrey Huggins), Parktown, Uplands, and Shortstone. It is bordered by Highfield, Glen Norah, Hatfield, Mbare, Prospect Park and Ardbennie. The suburb was named after the rapids on the which flows through the Houghton Park/ Parktown areas. Administratively, Waterfalls, along with Hatfield, covers local council services for nearby Prospect.[3]

Education[]

Waterfalls contains a government primary school, Frank Johnson School. Another school in the suburb is an independent, Eland Oak Junior School. The most prestigious school in the area is Lord Malvern High School in Marlvern, with the other local school being, Hoxton High School.[4][5]

Parks and green space[]

Waterlily Gardens lies to east the suburb and was land donated to the City of Salisbury and became a park and popular event space. The park is mostly in the Parktown area of Waterfalls.[6]
