"Welcome To The Edge" is a song by American singer-songwriter Billie Hughes and the title song of his album Welcome to the Edge. The song was written by Roxanne Seeman, Billie Hughes, and Dominic Messinger. It was a commercial success in Japan recorded with the Japanese title "Todokanu Omoi"(とどかぬ想い (One-Sided Love)) from the Japanese Fuji TV drama I’ll Never Love Anyone Again (Mou Daremo Aisanai) (もう誰も愛さない),[1] while concurrently airing as a love theme in the NBC television series “Santa Barbara.” It became the top-selling international single in Japan in 1991 after selling over 500,000 copies and was awarded No. 1 International Single of the Year in 1992 at the NHK Grand Prix Japanese Gold Disk Awards.[2]

"Welcome To The Edge" as appearing in "Santa Barbara" was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Original Song in 1991.[3][4]

Background[]

The song was written by Hughes and Seeman with Dominic Messinger, Music Director and composer of the Santa Barbara television series, after a previous song, “Turn It All Around”, that Messinger had selected in 1988 to use in connection with a love triangle between the character Julia and Father Michael, became a popular love theme prompting viewer requests.[5][6]

Billie Hughes' recording of "Welcome To The Edge" first appeared in the television series "Santa Barbara" connected to the character of Robert Barr. As the drama unfolded "Welcome To The Edge" became a central love theme revolving around the Robert Barr, Kelly Capwell, and Craig Hunt love triangle. The Billie Hughes version was attached to the Robert Barr and Kelly Capwell love affair while a female vocal version was attached to the Kelly Capwell and Craig Hunt love affair, with performances airing for two years. [7] [8]

During this time, the Japanese duo "Wink" recorded a version of this song entitled "Omoide Made Soba Ni Ite" which charted at No. 1 on the Japanese charts.[9][10][11]

Hughes and Seeman produced a new version of "Welcome To The Edge" using the arrangement of the Wink recording with Chuck Wild programming the track and recording Jimmy Haun's guitar at Wild's Hollywild Studio. Hughes vocals' were recorded over the track mix at Glass Sea Studios.[12] The new version became the theme song of the Fuji TV drama "I’ll Never Love Again (Mou Daremo Aisanai) (もう誰も愛さない)". Welcome To The Edge with the Japanese title "Todokanu Omoi (とどかぬ想い (One-Sided Love))" was released as a single by Pony Canyon peaking at #1, selling 520,000 copies.[13] On the sales of over 500,000 copies, Billboard journalist Kaz Fukatsu remarked "That's an impressive figure, since most karaoke fans can't sing along in English. Five years ago, No. 1 international songs sold only about 40,000 copies."[2]

"Welcome To The Edge" was awarded #1 International Single Of The Year, at the NHK televised Japan Gold Disc Award show.[14] Billie Hughes performed "Welcome To The Edge" live for the telecast in Tokyo, along with MC Hammer who performed "U Can't Touch This."[15]

The Japanese TV drama “I’ll Never Love Anyone Again (Mou Daremo Aisanai) (もう誰も愛さない)” featuring “Welcome To The Edge" ("Todokanu Omoi") began rebroadcasting all 12 episodes on October 8, 2019 on TVK (Television Kanagawa), a local Japanese station located in Kanagawa, in the Greater Tokyo Area.[16][17]
