Wellcamp is a rural locality in Toowoomba Region, Queensland, Australia, located 16 kilometres (10 mi) west of the city centre. At the 2016 census, Wellcamp recorded a population of 295.[1]
Geography[]
The Toowoomba Bypass passes through the locality from north to south, intersecting with Toowoomba Cecil Plains Road for access to the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport and to Cecil Plains.
History[]
The locality was named by the Railways Department after a camp for workers constructing the Toowoomba–Hendon railway, which happened to be located beside a well in the area. The line opened in 1869.
Wellcamp Provisional School opened on 27 February 1899, later becoming Wellcamp State School.[2][3]
Airport[]
There is an airport located within Wellcamp to service Toowoomba and the surrounding districts, known officially as Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.[4]
Education[]
Wellcamp State School is a government primary (P-6) school for boys and girls at 609 Drayton Wellcamp Rd. In 2017, the school had an enrolment of 77 students with 7 teachers (6 full-time equivalent) and 5 non-teaching staff (3 full-time equivalent).[5]
