The bank was founded in 1978 by Elmer Whitaker when he bought three bank charters in Central and Eastern Kentucky.[1] The bank grew through acquisitions of competitors and, in 2014 at the death of his founder, was among the largest banks in the state with over 500 employees and 2 billion dollars in assets.[1]
Since 2011, the company owns the naming rights to Whitaker Bank Ballpark.[2]
