Serge Wilfried Kanon (born 6 July 1993) is an Ivorian professional footballer who plays as a central defender for Pyramids, and the Ivory Coast national team.
Club career[]
Early years[]
Born in Taabo, Ivory Coast, Kanon made his youth debut for Empoli's junior team in the Italian Primavera in 2010, at the age of 17. He scored his first goal for Empoli in a 2–2 draw against Novara.
Gloria Bistrița[]
After impressing during the trial period at the Romanian club, Gloria's coach, Nicolae Manea, decided to sign him permanently. He made his Liga I debut on 22 July, in a 1–2 defeat against Astra Ploiești, playing 40 minutes of the game.
Corona Braşov[]
After the 2012–13 season Nicolae Manea went on to coach Corona Brașov where, among others, he signed Kanon from Gloria Bistriţa. He played as left back in Corona's Liga I debut, a disappointing 0–1 defeat against Oţelul Galaţi at home. He played 90 minutes in the following four Liga I fixtures as well, missing the sixth match due to work permit issues.
ADO Den Haag[]
Following the work permit issues with Corona Braşov, Kanon was released to sign a two-year contract with the Dutch Eredivisie team ADO Den Haag. Here too, he had problems with his work permit and after missing half a season he was declared eligible to play for ADO in January 2014. On 25 January 2014, he made his debut for the club in the 3–2 home win against Feyenoord.[2]
Kanon was offered a contract until mid-2019 with Lille OSC in July 2015, who would take over his two-year ongoing contract with ADO Den Haag for approximately €500,000.[3][4] There, he would be united with head coach Hervé Renard, who was the national team coach of the Ivory Coast national team with which Kanon won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015. Lille declined the transfer after several medical examinations did not lessen the club's concerns about his physical condition.[5] The medical tests revealed cardiac arrhythmia. Kanon returned to The Hague, where he underwent heart surgery.[6] He made 28 league appearances during the 2016–17 season, scoring once. The goal came on the last matchday of the season in a 4–1 win over Excelsior.[7]
Pyramids FC[]
On 18 September 2019, Kanon joined Egyptian Premier League side Pyramids.[8]
On 1 February 2021, Kanon joined Qatar Stars League side Al-Gharafa on a six-month loan.[9]
